Building a Genuine Bush Plane

There's no better way to model a genuine Bush Plane then to build a model of a genuine Bush Plane. This one is based in southern Alaska, and is just screaming to be modeled -- so here goes.

The starting point for the model is my Super Cub Short Kit. Since the full scale was originally a crop duster the aft fuselage has to be modified to a flat top. It also has the L-21 style aft cabin windows, a "glass" lower cabin door, and a bunch of additional cabin bracing. Do to the wing mounting system the windows won't be completely accurate, but close enough to be believable.

And with that, let the building begin!!!

Framing the Fuselage

Building began with the fuselage since it will require the most modification. First, the new upper longeron profile and cabin side window framing was marked up on the plans. Once done, the two sideframes were built up.

Joining the Side Frames

The side frames were joined, begining with the landing gear beams, wing mount header assembly and rear wing hold down plate. The tail was pulled together next, then all the cross pieces added. Since the top of the fuselage is flat, the the upper formers were replaced with 1/16 X 1/8 balsa cross pieces.

Finishing the Frame

The next step was to get the cabin out fill and stringers in place. Once all the shaping and sanding was done, the additional "V" bracing was added to the unsupported wing bolt plate as well as the back half of the rear "X" brace. The front half will be in the wing center section.

Tomorrow, it's on to the wings.

Z, I know what you mean. ANYTIME I see an airplane the "now that would make a great looking model" light comes on. And somehow, the J-3's and Super Cubs really stand out from the croud.

Well Pat, we know that your middle name is "Cub" so is this one any surprise

Jared, thanks to you. If not for your PBY I would not have had the inspiration to finish mine.

Hi Pat -

When you're finished with the first plane in your Tundra Fleet, here's a suggestion for number two:
