First trip to Weldon

I made it up to Weldon this morning for my first DS session and I was not disappointed. The wind did not kick up until 11am and continued to build through the afternoon peaking at about 30mph. The Skua was first up, flying in 10mph breeze, used the light wind to do some check runs of the backside. The Skua soon found its legs once the wind picked up started cranking off some 100-130mph estimated since I do not own a Radar gun. The JW was up next once the wind started hitting 20mph steady. Now I know why this is the world record hill, smooth and predictable(atleast today). This is new to me since most of the hills in Vegas have a lot of nasty rotors, getting rolled over is very common. I'll be back up on the hill tomorrow am, hope I don't have the hill all to myself again. Cheers, Mike

ps- who found this hill and when? The guy should have a plaque with his name on it on top of the hill -great find.

Glad you liked it Mike. Sorry I missed you by a few days.
I believe Weldon used to be a popular spot for Paragliding. I once came across a website for a PG flying school there.

Well, I had the hill all to myself yesterday and had a blast getting about four hours of actual flight time each day. The winds started early and lasted all day, ended up getting a 42.3 mph gust on the meter. The shear layer was good most of the day with the late afternoon becoming attached to the hill and creating a lot of bad air in the back. The Skua seemed to handle it alot better than the JW, it must be the thinner airfoil on the Skua. The JW even out weighs the Skua by 11 oz., JW once on step came into its own. The Skua tracks better and seems more stable going through the bad air. Anyway, had a great time and hope to return in March hopefully with the D60. Mike

i think it was in feb of 2006 we were flying parker with bowman and he was telling us of a great hill by lake isabella where you could go 200mph and the landing was better than parker. he had been flying with a friend from near there. (not sure who!) just a week or two earlier. he said he'd only been there a few times then and it was worth the drive!

Lake Isabella CA 2-24-10

So what happened to everyone. Went flying all by myself. To make matters worse, the wind was good, and no one to share it with. Actually the wind was strong at 42mph, but quite turbulent backside. Going by the Lake it was calm with no white caps, and the windmill at Weldon was barely turning. The KOA flags were hanging around doing nothing! Rain had done more damage to the roads, with some deep ruts. More washouts this year than in the past 5 years put together.

Wow.

Did you leave the radar on a rock or fly with it between your knees?
No witness for a new D80 record? Oh well, there should be plenty more to come this spring.
Weldon wind. I think of the air as "sucking" from the desert when it's calm at the lake and big on the hill. The opposite to some Summer days when it's 25 at the lake or Cook Peak and dead calm in Weldon. "Pushing" against an inversion.

I was fortunate

Someone saw my plane flying and came up the hill to see. He stayed and was kind enough to radar for me.
