A few guys in the marine boats enviorement also made a few home brew 12volt versions using old marine motors or lawnmower engines etc

From the other links supplied above found this one how to make a lawn mower engine version

http://theepicenter.com/tow082099.html

its seems to be do able

For field purposes where you can put it at the other end of the runway out of range noise from small engines going like the clappers might not be a problem

The big motor turning slowly can use so little fuel one guy was 1 litre per hour kero but the machine was like 200lbs or 100kgs

Does seem 8hp motor will probably give as litle as 2kw of power so losses seem to be big

But for modeling purposes the more noisy short life high fuel consumption two stroke types at cheaper prices lighter weight would be best solution to most modelers who can always put a big sound proof curtaian in front of it to send block upwind noise disturbing the glow heads with thier glow motors

any working desines let us know but figure most will find a 240volt/110volt 2500watt sub $500 second hand building site generator the easiest off the shelf solution and run everything like at home wall socket
