Well i got the next version mostly done.


It has about a 40" wingspan with 286 sq. inch or about 2 sq. ft. of wing area. Made from depron with carbon rod leading edge and balsa reinforcement in the middle area of wing. Servos are pull-pull and the ductfan is mounted on top.
With 2 CS-10 servos, Rec., Spd. Cntrl., GWS Duct fan, it works out to be about 3.9 oz. With my lith-ions and ready to fly right at 5.9oz.
So wing loading about 3oz./sq. ft.
Will try it out Thursday

Hey Folks

Well I was amazed. The plane FLYS GREAT
I was worried about the fan providing enough thrust.

Don't Worry - Be Happy

The plane took right to the air and after a little bit of trim and throttling back it was flying smoothly.

It will fly on about 1/3 throttle and really moves with full throttle. Did not want to overstress the airframe to soon so I held back on some of the pylon turns and loops.

Glides very well. ( faster then the Big Wing ) but will slow down nicely. Not much trim change needed between throttle settings(None)

Will have pictures when my buddy Don Mondica e-mails me the photos. (This afternoon I hope.)

Its great watching watching this design unfold !

Such a simple thing, so many possibilities.

We have some time aloft contests and I'm thinking the big one might be a winner

Just added a tailcone to the DuctFan The guy at Airomicro That he gets more thrust with the inlet ring and tailcone.

Used a balsa nosecone from old rocket parts. (I wonder if those old C & D motors work )

Hey, SPFD-E-FLYER! Coupla questions, if you don't mind.

How does your fan behave on that diet of Li-ion (X3) cells? Isn't that rather more volts than the GWS fan can take?

Also, I can't quite make out the details of your pull-pull configuration. It looks like it somehow makes a turn out mid-wing someplace. How are you doing that?

And lastly, if I haven't been pest enough, where on EARTH are you finding 40 inch sheets of Depron where you are? Care to share?

SPFD, this is really interesting. I am really fascinated by the shape of the Air Surfer wing. As I pointed out in another thread, the designer has some pretty strong credentials:

You have done a great job of scaling it up. Your smaller wing is getting close to the size I had in mind for one I wanted to power with a direct drive GWS EDP-50 (IPS) motor with 3x2 prop on a couple of Li-poly cells. I'll have to buy one of the original Air Surfer wings to fool around with in my living room over the winter. There are all kinds of different possibilities with different scales of the wing using different size motors. Very cool.

Have built several glider versions UP to 48" span....amazing!!!!..nice powered version SPFD-E...like that pull pull setup...will use flexible soda straw glued to wing (to make that turn)for my guides...thanks for paving the way!!!

Hey Folks

I reworked my pull-pull system and it works good now.

Got some video and i am going to take the digital 8 and convert it to something the computer can use, but i need someone to post it.
Does anyone know somebody that can do that.

Flew over 35 min. tonight in my back yard on my qualcomms
with both planes.( Duct fan and the Big guy.)

Dale: I use the 2 cell qualcomms not 3 cells so I have not notice any problems so far. My wing is 2 pieces. Glued in the middle with the balsa spanning over the joint and then taped.
If you find that big of depron let me know.

Dave: I read some of your post and that helped me along.
I saw tha micro flight version but I notice he did not say anything about how well it flew with the aileron in the center of the plane. I had to move mine out to the wingtips. They did not work in the middle.
Got some SMALL actuaters, small motors and some lith-polys cell to try to make a smaller wing ( 20" maybe or smaller. Need to do some figuering)
