Air Surfer Big Brother - Fanfoam Wing

Just thought you might like to see my new flying wing

It is a modification from a "AIR SURFER" glider.
Scanned the glider, brought it into autocad, enlarged it. and started to make all different sizes till I ended up with this.

wing span 65"+/-
total wing area 700 sq. inch about 4.86 sq.ft.
weight 8.5 oz. 10.5 with batt.
wing loading 2.16 oz/ft ready to fly
motor GWS-A works but I am using a duel GWS-B with 1260 prop
GWS speed control, receiver
2- CS-10 servos on the wings

Started out with the ailerons in the middle section but they did not work very well(Adverse yaw), had to move them to the outer wing tips. Worked Great. I've been flying it indoors at the soccer dome and it flys so smooth . it banks very gracefully.. It does not need any vertical surfaces. Flys outdoors very well. It glides great and the birds like it too.

Very nice
What kind of gear ratio does it use? Is it just one layer of FanFold foam? What kind of outdoor flight times do you achieve.
I want to make something like this in the future.
Thanks
Todd

Hey Pick

It is one layer of Blue fan flod foam glued in the middle.

It does not do well in high-g, but for gliding around it is just great.

I am working on a smaller version of the wing using a GWS-DFU-50 with depron. Aprox 40" wing span and I will use some reinforcement with carbon rod on the leading edge and a extra layer of depron in the across the middle 1/3 section.
As far as gear ratio look up on the GWS web site . It works with the A motor but it climbes better with the C or the dual motor.

With the light wingloading and a little breeze it flyes forever outdoors. I am using some cell phone litho- ion and I dont have the time to fly all day, but I think it would easy fly for 30 min.

Here is the cross sect. view. If you can find the AIR SURFER foam glider at a toy store(TOYS-R-US) it should all make sense.

Air Surfer Big Brother - Fanfoam Wing

SPFD-E-FLYER,

You should be applauded for breaking this new ground. I think this is very cool! You didn't have any photos of the bottom of the wing, and I'd love to see how you did your battery install.

I wouldn't think that a plane of this format would be required to do aerobatics or things of that nature. This is obviously a "floater" that has to be treated more delicately than your typical Zagi.

Couple of questions for you:

Had you considered a pusher configuration for saving on broken props? and

What do you have for reinforcement of the wing joint? At this span there is a lot of leverage on the center section, assuming that is where the joint is.

Regards,

Dale Case

Hey Dale

Hey Dale
The two half are joined with supergold CA and Tape.
Yes their is some flex in the wing but this plane was made for more of a indoor flyer or for a calm wind not for high speed. I made it up in an afternoon and was amazed it flew so well. The guy's at the dome where I fly thinks it's pretty neat.
I wish you could see it fly.
The bottom has some velcro about 2" from the leading edge.
As for the pusher design. Give it a shot. It can fly so slow that I can hand catch it easily. It might be a little tricky to get the C of G
right with the motor in back.

Thank for your reply

What a great idea! I have had one of the"Air Surfer" planes for a while and enjoyed playing with it but never thought to "super size" it. Just hope I can figure out everything you did to make one.

Did you mold the undercamber airfoil like the Air Surfer? If so, how did you do it? I would like a copy of the scan too, please. I had just bought a supply of fan-fold when I saw your thread, maybe I need to get some more!

Air Foil

Tpgbill

Yes it is undercamberd like the surfer. I did it with a heat gun and a little time.
