SSDC 100" Pitcheron, vacuum bagged solid hardwood

I'm starting the SSDC early because I plan to have this done for the Tri-Slope Six-Pack and the PSS Fest. I'm not sure I want to land this thing at my home slope.

Here's the idea:
100" span pitcheron
Aspect ratio ~17
AUW 90-100 ozs -- plus 100+ with ballast (200+ AUW)
loading: 25oz/sqft -- 50 with ballast

Because of the high AR, the loading is a bit misleading. It shouldn't need more than light to moderate lift when unballasted. It should stay up with a 35 oz 60" plane.

I'll be using a ~.45" steel joiner as a pivot. The wing will be FG/Kevlar over Poplar. The Kevlar really stiffens the wood from my test bagging and eliminates any tendency to split. I'll be using a 2.5" wide fuse, which will be substantially stronger than the 1.5" wide fuses I have been using. The fuse will be about 4" tall at its max. You can imagine how strong a piece of wood this size is! It will be hollowed out a little for the 100+ozs of lead to fit (approximately 15.6 cubic ins).

I know it is going to land fast, but it should be very strong and easy to repair. I haven't come up with any new and elegant ways to slow it down, so I'll try it without any landing aids first. If I find that it is getting beat up too much, I can always add flaps or an air brake later on.

I will be making the fuse in two pieces (similar to the 66" version I made for the last SSDC), where all the gear, linkages and wing joiner are housed in the "hatch". The hatch will be nylon bolted to the major part of the fuse containing the ballast. This way the pitcheron linkages are somewhat protected by shearing of the bolts.

I have ordered a couple of Hitec digital robot servos, HSR-5995TG (333oz-in of torque (433 holding torque), 417 if I use 7.2V (541 holding), Titanium gears). They look really good for this application -- I just hope they don't have any [initial] slop. I think Joe is using these for his 160" DS plane.

I won't be starting until this weekend since I have some projects to complete first. I am just very excited about the project and am looking forward to it.

The pic is not a top view, so it makes the wings thinner that they actually are...still, they are higher AR than usual.

I was thinking Brian would be a good choice to launch too after seeing his thread. I'll also need a twisty wing expert to look at my throws before maiden. I'll be programming in a few flight modes along with dual rates on my Evo so I can have a variety of rates. I don't want to end up like last time with super twitchy rolls and no elevator! That was NO fun.

I'll have a pic of the fuse design in the next couple of days.

I was thinking of making an airfoiled V-tail for this one. Any suggestions for how to do a removable tail on it? I was thinking of two bent music wire joiners permanently attached to the fuse. I would rather have some sort of nylon bolt method of attachment, but can't think of a super easy way to do it. (I'm lazy.)

Y V? -- Particularly if you're lazy... isn't a nice conventional X-tail easy to bolt on and be straight?

With a V, I can make just one airfoiled part (and cut into two). With a vert and a horiz, I have to cut two (different) parts. If I'm going with slabs, it's not as big a deal. Also, a removable V will pack slightly smaller. Since they won't move on a pitcheron I won't have to worry about all of the V tail linkage stuff.

Vs stay off the ground on landing too, and I like the look of a V tail.

I hear you though -- a V tail that is not straight is bad news.

Just so you get the idea. The tail is just TLAR right now. The fuse might change slightly too. I think it looks pretty sweet.

It's been a while on this project, but I still want to start/finish it.

I cut the main fuse today. It came out poorly due to some errors in programming, so I'll be using some bondo and paint on it. You won't be able to tell the difference.

24oz for the fuse. It is big and beefy! I have room for about 120ozs of ballast.
