The main goal of the PHilidelphia project was to use high frequecy RF energy traveling through the rigging and hull of a ship to make it "invisable" to radar. What came of it was that the crew that was aboard the ship suffered from some microwave radiation exposure (leading to a few crew dying) and that the system would not function as theorised. The good thing about it is that they discovered that you could hide the magnetic signature of the ship by using cables around the hull to Degause the ship. We still use a very similar system on out ships today.

A little more information about ships for those who are interested. A ship will generate static electricity just by traveling through the water. This builds up on the hull and polarizes + and - which also magnitises the hull. Back in the days before radar and sensitive electronics aboard ships this was no big deal but today that polarization can interfere with radars, radio, satalite, and computer systems aboard the ships. This generation of static electricity is also a big reason that ships are wired in a delta configuration (3 phase floating ground).

This is information gleaned from a grandfather(sailor aboard the ship) of a friend of a friend....

Quote:
The DD in Operation Rainbow rematerialized, not all the crew aboard were killed. The magnetic field was supposed to just bend the light around the ship so that you could see around the ship by looking at it, essentially seeing through the ship. The experiment worked and caused the ship to effectively cloak. A side effect of creating a magnetic field of that scale to bend lightwaves around an object of that size was that anyone near the magnetic generator had the metal in their body magnetically adhere to the hull of the ship. There isn't a lot of metal in your body, but it is dispersed over a large area (most noteable is the iron in your blood) The small molecules of metal being drawn from it tore through the cell walls of the body and caused it to decay on a cellular level. This gave the appearance of sailors being fused inside of bulk heads. It was really just the sailors puddle of flesh magnetically adhered to the hull with a few recognizeable body parts still in tact and the sailors clothing. The ship was towed out to sea and scuttled. The surviving sailors were taken aboard the escort ships and transfered to a naval infirmary. None of them lived for more than a few hours.

The Eldridge was fitted for deguass equipment which was dismanteled before it was recomissioned to greece. The ship used in the philidelphia experiment wasn't the Eldridge but was undergoing testing at about the same time the Eldridge was testing degausseing equipment. The Eldridge was the navy's alibi to plausibly deny that anything had gone on. The secret nature of the testing of the Deguassing equipment is the reason the Eldridges ship log had its pages cut out on the dates in question. The Eldridge was never in Philidelphia from what I understand, and aside from its experimental trials with the deguassing equipment it served a normal escort duty. The deguassing equipment was mostly removed, some wiring was left aboard and the eldridge went on to D-day operations and then was recommissioned the Lyon when it was given to Greece with 3 other destroyers. I believe it was sold to a salvage yard in 2002 and sent to scrap in 2003.

In the Philidelphia experiment, also known as rainbow, they used a destroyer that was built for tesla and his group. The crew involved in the experiment were volunteers and aware that there was risk in the project they were undertaking. There was no teleportation involved and most of the UFO hocus pokus stuff was released by the military to create a laughable ridiculous air. The ship was no longer sea worthy after its second test. The second was the test that the ill-fated sailors were aboard for.

I always thought that it was a story based on rumor, and written up by authors like Clive Cussler or Tom Clancey.

It would make one shudder if it were based on fact---.

I dont know how much fact is actually in all of those "experiments" what I do know is, the navy wanted to make their ships less visable to the "new" radar technology that was being developed and that Degausing came out of it in the end. What happened in the middle is prolly going to be unknown for a VERY long time if not forever.

Um... our boats are wood and plastic (for the most part) and we also are running a DC power system not a 3 phase AC power system with the hull as the floating ground. Now to model the degausing bands would be kinda usless unless you are building a breakaway model.

I haven't seen it, but hope to, if I can find a copy.

Read a review of the original novel, It's an interesting story with a lot of variations, and the inclusion of Nikola Tesla as part of the tale invites a bit of speculation.

Shades of the Philadelphia experiment?
