My Escape is finally ready to go for the 2011 season. I installed my new MEGA 16/40/2 motor, which went in without a hitch, and actually seems to help balancing, as I no longer need to shove the battery as far forward as possible.

Since this motor has a 4mm shaft, it no longer was going to work with the spinner I had. So this left me with three options: try to mill out the collet that I had (inaccurate), invest in a new spinner from tru-turn (~$30), or use a standard collet adapter (draggy!).

What I settled on you can see in the picture. I didn't want to invest in a new spinner just to have this be a failed experiment. So I put a block of balsa on the nose and sanded it down to shape. The result is much nicer in person then it is in the photos but it is a nice and slick transition.

With the 6.5x10 I am at ~500W on 3s, ~900W on 4s (and 18k RPM), and 5s is yet to be seen. This should make a nice growl when in the air compared to my Sunracer which will now get the 1112-2D and scream around the sky. Hopefully this plane will be faster still though!

I got to remaiden my Escape today. Flying it back to back with my Sunracer was quite fun as it gave the 4-stroke vs. 2-stroke feel. I could only guess that top speed is 170+ on 4s, hopefully i'll hear its even higher! But whats most important is the sound is AWESOME, and everything comes down cool, so its still an option to use a full 7x10 prop, or move up to 5s with a slightly smaller prop.

EDIT: The doppler turned up with speeds around 180mph, with the fastest coming in at 188mph down wind (5 mph)! Now I just need to find a battery thats not old and crudy and this thing should be absolutely ballistic!

Launch is done at ~1/3 throttle and there was not a hint of torque roll. This is something that surprised me slightly, as I expected there to be some torque involved. Fortunately my dad is a very skilled launcher and handled it without a hitch!

I'd be interested to know as much as you! I could only guess its around 18k once unloaded in flight. I'm also am going to guess I can get another 1000RPM or so out of a newer, stronger battery (I have my eye on some 2000mah 45C). Unfortunately, my wonderful Leader Dog in Training choose to have his one of his brightest moments and ate my castle link last night, so I can't download the logged data at this point.

I'll be sure to post here once I do get a new castle link.

Kid, thats sounds good, how about landing with these larger stiffer propps ? isnt there a risk for tearing the motormount off if the propp garbs on some grass or hole on landing..

Landing with these planes always comes with its own set of challanges. The first landing with this new setup was pretty bad, as it was pretty nose heavy and I couldn't bleed as much speed as I wanted. But so far so good!

I just do my best to get the prop level with the ground and then hope for the best from there!

My Escape died a rather disappointing death today, in that it didn't slam into the ground at a billion MPH. I lost motor response and in the process of setting up for landing, lost all control and it slowly rolled into the weeds on the far side of the runway from about 100 ft!

Fortunately, it rained pretty heavily all last night, meaning the ground was slightly softer then usual. The fuselage isn't in too bad of shape, and is basically done being repaired (just need to trim some glass and paint!). The wing is torn up pretty badly, especially in the center section due to the mounting bolt. I've starting repairing it, but it is going to be no easy process. At best this will now be a sport plane. But it'll be fun to work on my repair skills!

The problem is yet undetermined. The ESC refuses to arm, but that could be because it was mashed between the motor and battery, which both survived. Either the ESC overloaded and shut down (unlikely, as I wasn't consuming that much power!), or what I suspect is the flight pack just came unplugged from the ESC.

She lived a good life! I got at least 100 flights out of my Escape over the last two summers, and got to test all kinds of fun setups. Hopefully, this isn't the last time i'll get to fly her. But either way, its on to bigger and brighter things!

I know your pain. LOL I really enjoyed my Escape and wish I could get another as it was fun to fly. I wish someone would report on the Stilleto as I havent seen anyone who has a flight report yet. Its still 100.00 bucks more but maybe an alternitive
