I suppose it's about time to actually start building one of the ISR F-86's. With the plug and mold out of the way, fuses are starting to flow from Mr. Sampson's workshop. I got mine last weekend and was lucky enough to get Robert Cavazos to bag me some wings.

So I have a fuse and I have wings....Hell I'm nearly done

Don't expect this build thread to as speedy as my usual ones. But Carski also has a F-86 under construction so he can post also.

So, I bet ya think I fell asleep at the wheel, huh?

Nope, I've been making slow progress so here's a few more pics.

1st step was to clean up the wings. Sand the Leading edges, trailing edges tips and roots so everything was nice and smooth.

Next step was to cut out the control surfaces. I cut off the last 2" of the trailing edge and then capped the wing and the control surface with 1/4" balsa wood. Then I applied a layer of light 1.5 oz glass over that to seal it.

I am going to put flaps on mine so I cut off the inboard 8" of the aileron to make the flap. The flaps will be bottom hinged and the ailerons will be center hinged using those zap-in easy hinges. I cut a hole in the bottom of the wing for the aileron servos (Futaba 3102) and I ran torque rods for the flaps. I will mount one or two servos on the center of the wing for the flaps. I melted a servo wire run through the foam with a heated up wire.

Gotta join the bits now. First put the center section onto the fuse and sand it to match the fuse. You want it to flush against the fuse on each side. Next sand the dihedral angle into the panels and prep for joining.

Block up the panels and join then with epoxy. Make sure to put in the right amount of dihedral. 1.75" per side! Once that dries sand the seams to smooth them out and then put on some fiberglass over the joint. I used a layer of 6oz carbon and then a couple of layers of 1.5oz over that to smooth it out.

Next I routed a groove in the bottom and installed the torque rods for the flaps. Then I hinged the flaps to the wing. I've got the flaps set so that I get about 60 degrees of down (hope that's enough).

Next it's time to figure out how to attach the wing to the fuse. I will use two dowels in the front and two bolts in the back. I installed a 1/4 plywood plate in front of the wing saddle for the two dowels to go into and I installed another plate at the bacl of the wing saddle. I will install two blind nuts in this plate later on.

I placed the wing into the wing saddle and marked there the bottom surface of the wing is against the front of the fuse. Then I drilled two holes just below that line for the dowels.

Now measure the wing and get it centered on the fuse. Then tape or tack glue it in place. Turn over the plane and apply some tape over the front of the wing saddle so you don't glue the wing to the fuse. Now install the dowels into the holes in the fuse so that they lay on the bottom skin, Now mix up a batch of epoxy and cabosil and put a big ole glob on the dowels. A couple of layers of glass cloth will make sure they stay put.

Well that's as far as I've gotten. I have not got anyuthing done on int for the last couple of nights. Hopefully I'll feel a little better tomorrow and I can get some more work done on it.

Brian, it appears from the last picture that below the wing, we will need to build some sort of fuse bottom because the wing sits up higher than the two dowel pins.
