It seems that the wet season is upon us Oreegoonians

I'm seriously considering doing some nice static scale kits along with the flying R/C ones.

It has been nearly 17 years since I've done my last Monogram Spitfire in 1/48th scale. From those in the know, what are the good kits in 1/72 and 1/48 scale? Is Revell and Monogram still in scale plane kitting business, how about Lindberg, or Airfix? I suppose the best kits are to had from the UK as most of the really good websites for plastic modelling are UK based.

Are there any real good deals out there, and companies maybe to avoid..

I'm no expert but I would suggest you start by becoming a regular on this site, good kit reviews and a lot of complete articles on building specific kits.Retired USAF guy who runs a tight ship.
And you can't go wrong with Tamiya and Hasegawa kits, no one else even comes close.Especially Airfix. :-))
A lot of the re-issued Revell/Monogram stuff is good too, but still doesn't measure up to the Japanese kits.
Buy an airbrush. :-))

I have always liked the quality of Hasegawa kits and if you are into Golden Age airplanes Williams Bros. makes some very high quality kits.

Tamiya and Hasegawa model kits are the best kits i've ever built. revell and monogram are some of the worst kits i've ever seen. maybe i shouldn't have bought them from ToysRUs or walmart...

Dotto on Hasegawa and Tamiya. Can't go wrong, although some of their recent offerings are a bit pricey. I've also seen Acurate Minitures (who I though I heard may be back in business) has some really nice kits that I've seen going for decent prices in generic looking boxes at the local hobby stores.

Lindberg and Airfix are still around, but , well, um...

Hasegawa, Tamiya, Dragon for kits. 1/48th is my preference.

Aeromaster & Eagle Strike Production for decals.

Aires America for detail parts.

Squadron for reference books.

Things haven't changed much in the plastic model world, I guess.

As a young boy, I bought all the cheapy kits that our local department stores carried. I guess that Revell, Monogram and Lindberg are the Guillow's equivalant in modeling.

Years ago, our 88 Cent store carried an odd UK kit line that had some interesting WWI planes that were sort of psuedo rib structure, with a tissue like paper with graphics and details printed on the paper, that you glued on the plastic framing and then shrunk and doped. The kits would have been better if they were larger than 1/48 scale though. does anyone remember who made these kits?


I liked the Hasegawa and Airfix kits for the unusual planes offered. But being somewhat cheap, I usually bought domestic. I do have an airbrush, a cheapy Badger 200 external mix. I would do good to get a new one?

I dunno, I bought a cheap airbrush, then I bought an expensive airbrush, then I bought a compressor and what made the difference was the compressor. I still use the cheapie for bigger jobs and I think as long as you have a steady supply of air they work fine.
And compressors run from cheap to expensive. Despite the whole world saying shop compressors are too noisy I bought a Sears for $175,its small, its noisy, but 3 minutes will fill it, turn off the auto refill and I can paint 2 models before I fill it again.
So...................

I agree, glider kits are hard to come by. My suggestion would be to keep a close eye on Ebay under"sailplanes". I see kits come through every once in a while. It seems that only European companies make glider kits.

The kits you described (printed paper to be glued on) were produced by Renwall. A newer version is being done by (I believe) a Russian company. I bought one about a year ago at Trains and Lanes Hobby Shop in Easton,Pa. Went back in June of this year and there were none to be found.

Keep looking. I remember an ASW sailplane passing through the shop I worked at as recently as last winter. There were others too but I can't remember what they were.

Been looking myself.. I picked up a couple off of e-bay, but at 1/72 they were a bit smallish. Lemme know if you find some!

Oh yeah, back on topic, ditto on Hasegawa and Tamiya!
