I thought I heard that the sticky-list could be easily cured with ventilation... one side would go down, and create a vacuum when it tried to rise?

Memo to Self: Someday, get a Mt Washington and convert it to one of these early NY tugs.

Steamboatmodel: Did the swing arm version run ok on the straights too? I saw a swing arm rig in R/C Boat Modeler several years ago and have long considered that rig for one I have stashed away on the shelf. I have also wondered about using sintra for the uper levels under the plastic laminate to reduce the topsides weight of the model.

Suction issues

Thanks areo

There is a group of holes drilled in the fan pattern on both sides, should get rid of any suction problems, we'll see.... Can always "snap" the rudder to the other side. quick turn. Maybe Longbike can let us know how his works....Harry

Wow! Given the historical period in which Mt Washington operated, you better get a Sheriff figure to meet her at the pier when the ship docks. It was frowned upon even to see a woman's ankle in those days, let alone what the "lady in the red dress" is showing off. She does spice things up...

As an aside, I was wondering what the throttle controls for the steam engine looked like in those days for purposes of pilot house detailing. Same as a conventional engine order telegraph for a propeller-driven steamship?

More like this... Various pulls to ring bells in the engine room, and a voice tube.

From display at the Howard Steamboat Museum, across the way from Luh'vuhl.

Don't remember where I got it from, but I have a list of example bell signals:

Stop to slow ahead: 1 bell, 2 jingles
Stop to half ahead: 1 bell
Stop to full ahead: 1 bell, 1 jingle

Slow ahead to stop: 1 bell
Half ahead to stop: 1 bell
Full ahead to stop: 2 bells

Slow ahead to half ahead: 1 jingle, 1 bell
Half ahead to full ahead: 1 jingle

Stop to half astern: 2 bells
Half astern to stop: 1 bell
Half astern to full astern: 1 jingle

Full astern to stop: 1 bell
Astern to slow astern: 2 jingles
Full ahead to full astern: 4 bells, 1 jingle (or any series that sounds like PANIC)

So the same signal means different things depending on where you're starting from, and you better know where that is if you're the pilot!

I think the engine order telegraph must have dropped the collective blood pressures of a whole lot of pilots and engineers...

Thanks, Pat. So I guess a "dinger" operated by a momentary contact switch would be needed to be authentic when getting underway. Have you run into an engine bell among the synthesized sounds? I guess the model railroaders should have one. I bought a steam whistle for my kit, but an engine bell would definitely add interest.

Hi Pete,
Sorry for the delay in replying. When Charles uses the swing arm it is on a proportional channel on the transmitter, thus when he makes a turn he moves the Arm in the opposite direction of the turn and then returns the Arm to neutral for straight running. He has got this down so pat that you don't even notice it.
Regards,
Gerald

Thanks. I think the setup I saw in RC Boat Medeler had the swing arm connected by a "Y" harness to the rudder servo, so the movement of both was sychronized. Glad to hear it works well.

HARRY- Your Mount Washington is one sweet job. I’ll bet you’re a chaffing at the bit to take her for her shake down cruise. With the working smoke stack and some steam whistle sound recordings you will have it made. By the way, I like your choice on the lady in the red dress. Adds a little excitement to the cruise, but wait! Was it a lady in a red dress that did in Dillinger?

Harry -- I re-discovered (with great pleasure) this thread while looking at your attachments in response to the Brooklyn tug review thread. Did you ever get her in the water? You were waiting for the snow to melt about the time you got her finished. Probably WAAAAY too much water up there now, after Irene.
