OS vs. Evolution

Getting back into glow after a long hiatus from fuel and I've decided on a plane but I need a powerplant. What is the public consensus as far as OS engines vs. the Evolution? The engines in question are:

OS .55 AX

or

Evolution .52 NX

We're talking about an insignificant extra 12 bucks for the OS...is it the better choice

OS puts out a little more power than Evo.

OS 55 AX= 14.25oz. $149.99
Evo 52= 14.5oz. (weight w/o muffler) $129.99
At $20 more I'd buy the OS

One consideration is the break in period. Evolutions don't need one. Just start it, fine tune it, and fly.

By the time it takes to remove the needle valve limiter on the Evo(which I highly recommend you do) you could have your OS broke in.

*As a side note....they say Evo's are broken in at the factory but that is not the case. I've owned 3 (.36, .46 and .61) and seen a bunch and none were completely broken in when new.

I personally think Evolution engines are giving OS a run for the money ....and the winner is: THE MODELER...both are great running engines!

I've seen great write ups on both and the consensus seems to say OS has the better power output. I'll probaly go with the OS, they've got a long proven track record.

"funtanas" I'm wanting a bit more power than the .46 thats why I'm going with one of the 50's. Same size as a 40 but with more brute force!

Go For The Os Os Os Os You Will Never Have The Problems That Follow Evo. Oh They Run Good For A While Then Like Magic Problems Occur. That Won,t Happen With The Os Os Os Os Os Here Me Now Believe Me Later!

As an OS and an Evolution user I am on the fence about this one. All of my Evo .46's have run like a drem, while my OS AX .46's are 50/50. I have one AX on a trainer for my son that is nothing but rock solid, yet I cannot get the .46 AX on my Slow poke to not bog down when going from mid throttle to high throttle while airborn. My Evo 1.00's are great engines and have run much better than my OS .91. My Evo .40 is great, but so is my OS .40 LA (which is alot less powerful due to the design of the engine). I guess what I am saying is that you can have trouble with any engine, or have success with any engine, regardless of the brand name stamped on it. I have yet to have issues with the Evolution engine though, and will probably purchase them over the OS just because of the lower cost. Now, I just wish Evolution made a 1.60 sized glow engine...

I agree. My 46NT was so tight, it was actually squeaking on startup for the first couple of tanks.

I'd have to say that both OS and Evolution are both excellent engines in their own right. Evolution engines are very user friendly. Both are smooth running, reliable, and easy to start. You can't go wrong with either.

My engine supplier recently informed me that the OS 50 has been withdrawn owing to piston problems, (not specified) guess I will stick with my three 46; one of which been running for nearly five years now and still a good engine.

My local hobby store told me the same thing about the now defunct 50. They also mentioned that the .46 may be phased out in the near future with the 55AX being the replacement???

It was a few extra bucks going with the .55 over the .46 so I hope the decision was the right one.
