Removing covering color from iron

Whats the best way to remove the color residue off a covering iron? Mine has a tint of red on it from the red I was applying on my plane earlier. Before I noticed it was on there I got some of it on my white covering I applied, is it possible to remove it from my white covering or is it there forever?

Wipe with a cotton cloth while the iron is hot.

I use dryer sheets while the iron is hot. Cleans the iron right up!

I use Acetone on my iron. (Acetone is a cleaning solution.) It might work on the white covering too, but try it first on a piece of scrap white covering to see if it dulls the color any. I recently used some on silver color Ecospan to clean off the excess Ecofix residue (Ecofix must be applied to the surface to which Ecospan will be ironed on to) and the silver color did not dull or thin.

I have also used Acetone on foam and plastic. Since it is not a thinner, it doesn't, or shouldn't, melt these materials.

Get the scratchy out of the kitchen sink and scrub it off.

Aerogloss thinner. Wipe it on, wipe it off. Aerogloss won't attack the material on the iron, but it sure eats up covering goo.

You don't want anything abrasive because you're going to be sliding that thing over the covering and any rough spots will scratch the finish.

I use those iron socks and usually get a plane or two out of each one. These can be reversed after they get too dirty. I try to do the lightest colors first. I like how the socks seem to buffer the heat and protect the covering. -Steve

As far as plastic scrubby scratching metal, I don't think so.
If anything it will burnish the iron.

I've used dope thinners and acetone with great success. now I wipe the whole covered model with it after covering..brings up a sheen and gets rid of any bits of glue.

Don't know if it's still available but I use a product called Ironex. Made especially for cleaning irons. I hope its still available as I'm running low.

Candle wax works too! Try it while the iron is still hot. I wouldn't use colored candles.

wow i've apparantly been doing this the wrong way. I just wipe it while it's hot on an old pair of jeans.
