Well, James and I were able to hook up and go sloping near Dunedin. I have sloped in some beautiful places before, but this place is amazingly beautiful. I will post an on-board video in a couple of days.

In the mean time, let me say that the slope is perfect. It is in a farmerís paddock (field to us Americans) on the edge of a very steep hill. The lift is strong and steady even in relatively light winds. The further you go out from the slope the better the lift. There are no rotors at the slope or behind it. Landing is a non event. Just walk back away from the slope, make a big looping turn and land into the wind on nice smooth pasture. If you do screw up (how?) and land sown the hill, you just walk down to get it. The only hazards are the cow pies! The site is less than 20 minutes from downtown.

And get this. James has this amazing idyllic site all to himself! No one else in Dunedin seems to slope! Maybe it is time to emigrate.

Video to follow.

Thanks for taking me James.

Cheers

Greg, if you immigrate to Dunedin, don't forget the frigid cold winters they have! You can escape by going to Auckland easily enough, though, and there's a few good slopes up there too!

I loved living down there near Welli. It was like living on a golf course with sheep and unbelievable slopes all around my little town. <sigh> I'm going to retire there if I have to sell everything I own just for the plane ticket.

Thanks Greg. It was damn good fun. I've managed to squeeze in three more sessions out there this week as the weather has been kind. How's that aileron?

Have a great time flying in Chch and thanks for the beer!

Other NZ activities

On the way to Te Anua I ran into a fun fly in Gore, home to trout fishing.

No sloping in Te Anua, but I went hiking. It is a damn pretty place

I decided to take to the air my self in Queenstown

Fun Fly in Christchurch

Today I joined a couple of guys from Christchurch Soar, a local club, for a fun fly. Getting to the flying site required driving over unsealed (unpaved) roads along a ridge with breathtaking scenes and no guardrails. My support crew (wife and cousins) didnít really want to go down and then come back to retrieve me, so I only flew for a wee bit. It was overcast with limited lift. Still it was a beautiful place and I was told there was usually heaps of good lift. The club guys invited me to move down the road, but I did not want to test the patience of my support crew. My wife took some pictures. I will post some videos later.

Alex, thanks for hooking me up. Christchurch Soar, thanks for having me.

Next, Auckland!

Cheers

Sorry I arrived a bit late up there as I was flying the powered variety in the morning. Got up there around 1pm. Just missed you.

Good luck for the rest of your trip around NZ
