Ok question number two. From the PDF, What would be the most wanted AG series airfoils?
I need numbers and requests to get these water jet cut. The first estimates were $3.00 per airfoil template(top and Bottom)60.00 per set of the PDF.

Unless everyone wants those sizes.
I personally would like
option 1
6" ag-04, 4" ag-11
7" ag-04, 5" ag-11

Well i got some prices, for a full sheet it will cost me two blasters......ouch.

These are .063 mild steel.
I can get the aluminum in the equivalant for 25.00 a set, more to a cut sheet. but from what I have heard, aluminum sucks the heat right out of your cut wire, but I am not sure in this thickness.

I would like to see if anybody knows any cheaper water jet cutters, price per set-no shipping to me is 35.00. That isn't bad considering you get 5 sets of ag-04 from 4", 5",6"7" 8"
and 5 sets in ag-11.
thats a total of 20 pieces for 35.00 +s/h

is anybody interested, I need 20 purchasers to make the deal.

I asked them if they could send me a set to assure me the .dxf file didn't have any issues.

Doug,

Not trying to put a damper on your idea, but why steel/aluminum templates? Seems like overkill. FWIW I follow a lot of the stuff you do. Its always innovative...

I can make positive templates for my builds myself, but I would like to try the compufoil designe templates for the thinner ag airfoils. These thin airfoils are a little more sensitive to MISTAKES when they are 3/8" to begin with. In the 100's of wings i have cut, a tapered thin wing is hard. especially when I just got the materials to try bagging a few.

Thanks for watching....let me know if you are interested in anything, I usually have a few extra somethings laser cut, or pods layin around. (including 3mm coroplast in 5 colors. doug

Why the water cut aluminum? Wouldn't laser cut get you the same accuracy?

I have not researched the metal lasercutting. I am steering towards the mild steel though. maybe I will check into that, doug

Stupid question of the day: wouldn't metal (aluminium in particular) templates cool down the wire hence causing all kinds of problems?

Template cutting methods

Water jet will cut a much nicer edge than laser will because the water jet abrades the alum. away whereas the laser heats the material and a stream of gas blows the alum. away, not quite as precise control of the surface.

With a water jet you can get right down to a knife edge, none of the heat methods will go that fine or smooth.

You might see if someone could mill the templates for you on a CNC mill, milling is a whole lot cheaper process and in 1/16 alum. would go pretty fast.

Wire Template Cutting Methodes

Find a shop that has a Wire EDM machine or a friend that works with one. These are by far more accurate than a water jet. +-.0002 in.

How about water jet cutting phenolic?

Regarding the metal templates. Mild steel is only 1/5 as thermally conductive as aluminum, so that helps. The question does come up, though - could the water jet method work for phenolic or formica, etc?

Maybe splintering would be a problem? I have to imagine the water cutter's going to have no problem penetrating. Anyway, just asking. I admire your initiative and ingenuity in trying to source new template production methods.
