Supermarine Walrus - The Saga Continues...

I have decided to make all the builders in the first Scale competion look very good by entering myself!!

(See!, Did not even come close to building it in time. Now I will get this done as my 2008 New Years Resolution!)

...and I promise to keep the scotch tape and blood stains to a minimum during this competion.

I chose the Walrus as I have always liked the idea of a larger sized single engine Seaplane and the Walrus' lines are straight forward enough. I might even try my hand at CAD this time.

Shooting for a wingspan of about 52 inches and hope to keep things very light and Pat Tritle / Peter Rake like.

This should be fun!!!

I'll try, but it helps reduce my blood pressure.

Thanks for getting this contest going Charlie. I don't intend to win, but it gets me off my but and doing some design again.

Maybe the next contest should be to be the best voted build of a particular short kit.

Cheers!

Float - I envy you - Had I not incapacitated myself recently, I was thinking what would I build - the Walrus was a prime candidate. It will make a change from the stream of '30s civiliian planes in this comp. anyway

Looking forward to your build.

Pat,

I will build this in your honour, though after seeing your builds, I doubt I will do you justice.

Remember, the surgery recovery excercises mean that you should not pull the tab on the beer with your bad hand!!

The Walrus has a face that only a mother could love, but I think she looks pretty sweet!

I am going to have to have retracts on this girl as it is a pretty neat arrangement.

Float
That is exactly how I feel, a good reason to design something.

C'mon get on with it!
The dear old 'Shagbat' is one of my all time favourites.
(Shagbat was the RAF's nickname for the Walrus Mr Moderator)

Stats that I am coming up with for the "Steam Pigeon" are:

Full Size 1/12 Scale 1/10 Scale
Length: 33 ft 7 in 33.6” 40.3”
Wingspan: 45 ft 10 in 45.8" 55.0”
Height: 15 ft 3 in 15.25” 18.3”

Wing area: 610 ft² 610.5 sq in 878.4 sq in

GR weight: 7,200 lb 22 oz (target) 26 oz (target)

Looks like it will be an agressive Weight Program, but I think I might be able to do it!

I will be doing a 1/10 Scale Version. Once I can get closer estimates I will see what powerplant combination to use.

I really want to get this started and can't wait to get plans going.

I shall be watching this one with interest; I have a set of Aeromodeller plans for a 38" free-flight Walrus that I have been mulling over for a while, considering an electric conversion. The plan, I believe, came out in 1957.

The plans are rolling finally and I am slowly dusting off my CAD skills. Amazing how much I have forgotten! Will post some pics soon. All the lines are starting to look a little like an aircraft!
