Jim Hendry's A-10 with 2 GWS EDF-50

This morning was beautiful at Rancho San Antonio Park in California and I saw Jim Hendry's A-10. It is nicely done with a scaled gun on the front of the plane. I call Jim "Foam Master" because he is one the most prolific electric RC planes builder arond here. The A-10 flew great with just 1/2 throttle and it was very encouraging to all of us here to see it crusie around the flying field with those 2 GWS EDF-50. The specification is given below.

Construction Materials: Blue foam and depron
Wing Span: 34 inch
Wing Area: 155 square inch
Wing Chord: 5.0 inch
Wing Loading: 14.0 oz/ square ft
Length: 27 inch
AUW: 13.7 oz
EDF: GWS EDF-50 x2
Receiver: GWS R4N
Servos: 2 GWS Pico BB for Ailerons, and 1 GWS Pico BB for Elevator
ESC: FMA Mini 20
Batteries: 7-cell Sanyo AAA 720 mAh Ni-Mh

It was built to scale except that the middle section of the wing was un-intentionally lengthened by 4 inches which might have helped to have better fly characteristics.

New GWS EDF-50 Fan Rotors.

Attached picture is the new GWS EDF-50 Fan Rotors. They are EP2030x3 and EP2030x5. Yon can ge them from the following URL.

Inlet Ring and Exhaust Cone for GWS EDF-50

Attached picture is the Inlet Ring and Exhaust Cone for GWS EDF-50. They are a modified version designed by Dennis De Fevere. You can find the details at the following URL.

Sweet looking! But at 14 ounces it's going to fly like a brick on EDF 50's. I've flown an 8 ounce plane with twin 50's and performance was unimpressive even at that much lighter weight. He needs to put the new EDF-70's (or is it 75?) on there. That would be a nice setup!

Hello Tres Wright:

It was my mistake and the AUW is 13.7 oz. You ought to see Jim's A-10 fly to belive that I might have to take a video sometime next week. Also, I've just receive two sets of GWS EDF-75 and they look cool as shown in the following picture.

Really? Wow, that's great! I couldn't get my plane to fly that well on 2 fans, but it was only 24" w.s. Boomer has had fits trying to get them to fly his scratchbuilts too.

I'm glad to see you're going to be carrying the cones/rings, I read stats on those quite some time ago and they really make the little 50's sing!

Wow someone has finally gotten things right. Making different rotors for the same fan is what I think everyone should do. Thats a nice A-10 too sorry for the GWS praise but the ducted fan gas guys have been able to have different pitch/bladed rotors and now finally GWS has it for electric. I think that sometimes people do too much weight vs thrust calculations. I have a GWS Zero flying on a geared speed 400. It's a lot heavier than it should be and still flies great.

kit or plan

Is this plane going to become a kit or is there a way to get plans. The plane looks awesome. Glad to hear it flys good. Looking at the data for the 5 blade it should even fly better.

Glenn's Lear weighs about 13 oz. and I had a blast flying it. Everyone has different expectations of what a "good" flying plane is...

Just watched the video of the Lear. If I hadn't been told I wouldn't have guessed what was powering it. It sure performs well, I just love the sound of those 2 EDF's together

I was at Rancho San Antonio Park in CA yesterday and forgot to bring my digital camera to take flight picture/vedio of the A-10. Anyway, it was a great flight of Jim's A-10. Will try it again this weekend.

The following picture us the first cut of the EDF-50 Nacelle and we are going to test it with EP2020x3, EP2030x3, and EP2030x5 fan rotors to compare the performance.

Thanks for sharing the photos. If this thing flies at all well and can be made for a reasonable price I think I know several people who would want one, me included. Jim has done a wonderful job crafting this plane, far beyond what I could ever manage.

DNA, this plane may fly more like my Tipsy (3 oz thrust, 10 oz plane) than a Projeti, but for someone wanting a parkflyer this might fit the bill. I want to be able to fly my planes in small parks and fields.

One more picture from a different angle. The totla weight of inlet ring, nacelle, and tail cone is 4.0 grams (0.141 oz).

That is a beautiful nacelle! And so light too! I definitely want to give those a try on my couple of fan powered planes. Any release date yet, or still in the prototype stage?
