40" Depron Dynamite, Kline fogleman Depron build

I liked Craigs so much- I thought I would proceed.
6mm depron sanded to an airfoil-
I will not have the Fogleman airfoil fully scaled but will act as a CF backing with a sanded in airfoil. I will install the CF in an ARC from tip to tip with a CF angle braces on each side of the CF threaded and glued. This will hold 3.25" of total dihedral in aileron wing.
Here is what I have so far:

This is the bottom of the Wing

My Target weight is 5.5 ounces.

.pdfs are on post #26, on this page-

Oh man, I haven't heard reference to a Klein Fogelman step since a paper airplane book that I had as a kid. This idea was supposed to show up on full-size planes but that obviously didn't happen. Isn't it supposed to reduce stall speeds and increase overall effeciency?

Spar center designed and glued, Link to Klein-Fogleman

After building in foamies for a few years I will be hacking this airfoil similar to the foamie based versions. I think it will provide the support I need and hopefully some lifting qualities. I did not want to use an undercamber because of the speed at launch and I wanted minimal drag.

Link here to check out the research:
http://www.rexresearch.com/klinfogl/klinfogl.htm#ultim

I used some CF cut to wafer each side of the flatstock with the dihedral preset. I just have to spiderwire and CA now.

Wing assemble but not glued, Tail surfaces made

Wing assembled, unglued, unsanded with spar- 2.1 ounces
6mm depron tail surfaces, Lightning holes not cut yet or covered- 7 grams

Dihedral turned out pretty good, still contemplating if I use rudder or not.

WOW!, Looking good Doug!

I like the shape and smooth sweep of your wing. Did you freehand draw it?

I think you should make your Target Weight 4.5oz

FredM- Thats where I got the Info, link and seen the idea is the foamy forum.

Craig- Your on, 4.5 sounds good. Will it even penetrate with that weight???

The smooth Sweep came from a template that I drew from the Apogee set of plans. I buy 1" square graph paper from Officemax that is for doing lectures or presentations. Then I just scaled it 1:1 from the plans. I think it is close. I manually plotted it and then freehand draw, cut then sand.

I ordered some dymond 4.3g servos today and some D47s, I will try to finish it tonight to Maiden tomorrow or Sunday(its Raining the first day this winter here in Glendale,AZ.)

I will probably have to rob some 4.7s from another model.

Battery will be a 6v 1/3 AA battery for a camera-

Wing will be mounted on boom forward or aft to obtain CG.

Spar brace spider wired, Wing 90%

I drilled the CF plates and threaded the spider wire and Ca'd.
Attached the CF to one wing panel at a time with 5minute epoxy

sanded wing, still have to cut ailerons, suprisingly strong at this point.

Auw of wing glued 2.2 ounces

Nice. Your dihedral joint looks strong.

Hows about a PDF with that wing template?

When I finally do a R/E only dihedral wing I was thinking about these plastic kite dihedral braces:

No foam in the mail today

Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. We're having rain for the next couple days, so wouldnt be able to fly anyway.

Depron Build 99% Complete

Craig- Check the scale out.........................4.2 ounces!!!!I made this pod about a month ago out of a kids water rocket. It could use a layer of kevlar or 1 more layer of 2 Ounce F-glass. It will work for now. Things all went smooth and I even figured out how to use a mix in my radio for a 4 channel receiver with two aileron servos, I do not have a rudder. Will test tomorrow. Wish me luck! Doug

Here is the link where I get all my info, PDF and everything mid way down:

Paint job and battery change out

The battery I made for this model must have low voltage because it could not handle three servos without twitching. I installed my 150mah 4 cell for tomorrow. Balances better with the added 5 grams.

AUW with Paint job- 4.7 grams

WOW! Looking great! You've been busy little beaver! Now go out and chuck it!

Did you use a launch peg? Any close ups of it?

How about wing flex or twist? Is it much?

Launch Peg

Craig, I have installed the peg, .125" CF with a CF plate on each side of the wing the size of a dime. This is installed right behind the Spar with epoxy.

There is not much wing flex, I managed to throw it twice today before my elevator servo failed on me.

It was kind of nose heavy so I was having to use quite of bit of back stick. So I am not sure of how well it glides. Hopefully more tomorrow.

I will take pictures of the launch peg later.

Everyone,
I have A few flights in today, It floats nice but on launch it trys to do a loop. I thought it was negative built into the horizontal but I checked that, and It was zeroed out to the main wing.
I ended up putting in a Launch mix into my spring loaded trainer switch with 20 increments of down elevator with switch on, worked much better.
I will be doing some fine tuning before video.

dm- are you getting decent height and flight times with that airfoil? i was one of the guys on the foamy thread and liked the KF in powered flight, but found the glide to be very lacking due to drag. i am watching with interest to see if you can get more out of it than i did. Good luck!!
