I have made laser cut sheets for the Yardbird wooden fuselage design. They're in the dwg folder:

Where would you source the CF boom from? Did you design it to use the high aspect boom from Art hobby? Or something else.

It's not designed for any particular boom. The taper and diameter would need to be used to customize the formers F5 and F6 to match those dimensions and choose a boom that is the right length to give the approximate tail moment shown on the non-pod fuselage. If someone has the Art Hobby boom dimensions, I can take those and apply them but my drawing as of now is a bit abstract in terms of the boom.

I hope this helps.

A tapering CF boom with a length of 32-34" should work. The diameter of the boom mount holes at F5 and F6 will need to be drilled to match it.

I contacted Art Hobby and they do not publish the specs for their booms since they are made to specifically fit their fuselage pods.

Mountain Models sells booms for both of Mark Drela's short kits (Bubble Dancer and Allegro). Here are the specs from their site:

Allegro: $33
Length: 32 in.
Diameter: 0.67 in. (2/3") tapered to 0.36 in.
16 grams
pre-preg carbon and bias glass

Bubble Dancer: $46
Length: 36 in.
Outside Diameter: 0.814 in. (13/16") tapered to 0.464 in
38 grams
pre-preg carbon and bias glass

Given the inset of the boom in the pod of a few inches, the Allegro might come up a bit short but possibly workable. The Bubble Dancer boom, a bit long, but also workable.

I have posted a revision of the pod so that the Bubble Dancer boom from Mountain Models will fit the dimensions and boom holes in the formers.

Here are the most recent files:

Making wood fly since 2007

Wingloada,

Quick question about your wood fuselage. Currently as built is the rudder going to be carrying the weight to the plane while it is resting on the ground? If I draw a straight line from the low point on the forward section of the fuse it seems to intersect on the rudder not the aft part of the fuselage. If my interpretation is correct then the rudder will take a bit of abuse on landings and simply resting on the ground inbetween flights. Am I seeing this incorrectly?

Nice looking fuselage by the way.

Hi Windependence,

I increased the size of the hardwood tail skid to ensure that the rudder is clear. It's in the dwg and pdf that I updated just now. Thanks!

Does this look like a good idea?

[Based on positive feedback I have developed the design a bit more--too beefy?]

Here is the dwg:

pdf is attached.

I have an old 2-meter that someone gave me that they did the same thing to. Seemed to work fine.

Build

I have begun a build of the Yardbird fuselage with a wing adapter to use with Houston Hawk wings. It's in the Hawk build thread:
