LOL, I just found the recommended washout in the instructions 1/4" to 3/8". Looks like I'm good to go. Only took me all afternoon to get the wings even, and the 1/4" washout was by accident gotta love it when that happens.

Hey guys
I don't have a digital camera or I would post pictures of my 180. Today I finish covering & trimming her out. Still have alot of work
left to finsh her up but when I'm done I'll have my friend take a few pictures so I can post on this thread. The little Cessna is
starting to good for only being my second balsa built plane!

Question ,

My C 180 has been setting ... waiting for a first flight . Every thing is set to go but my rudder attachment seems flimsy , is this common or not ??? The rudder ( vertical stab. ) just sits on top of a stringer or am I missing something back there ??? Will try to post a picture soon .

Thanks for any help ..

Mike,
Reading the instructions it sounds like the vert. stab. is just glued to the center stringer. I've been wondering about that myself and may try to modify it if seams weak. Maybe push a pin down through it or something like that. Are you going to use tape hinges? I cut slots so I can use CA hinges,I'm trying to get away from the foam airplane type tape hinges.

Yes, the vert stab is just glued to that stringer.

But, my airplanes end up on their backs a lot when landing in deep grass. To strengthen that joint I use toothpicks when attaching fins to airplanes. Have used the method on two Dumas kits as well. Drill 1/16" holes and use the toothpicks as 'dowels' to hold together. For my 5 lb , 54" Spad I used 1/8" bamboo skewer material. It has survived two rather hard 'turtle' landings.

I have used both tape and mylar (old floppy disk) hinges on my C180's. They both work well.

Charlie,
I was going to use the floppy disc material as hinges ,but since they have been put on the "endangered species " list (don't have any). I will use Ca hinges( have some) I will use some toothpics( have some) for the vertical stab to strenghten it.

Yea, I want to see some pics!

I will be buying the C180 as soon as a get pretty good at flying my Beaver (Which will probably be in the beginning of summer.)

I will also be getting an MM Magpie AP plane soon. Probably around the same time as the C180.

Cessna 180

Here is an early picture of my C 180 . I used CA hinges cut to 3/16" wide to mount the control surfaces . The landing gear fairings are some sheet foam rubber from the craft store glued on with flex CA .

Mike,
It looks great! It looks like you did a very good job of covering it. What covering did you use? I will also use CA hinges on mine.

One question guys. When it comes time to glue the windshield and side windows on ,what would be a good glue to use? I don't want to use CA because I get a little sloppy with it.
