Hey Doug, How about a Flashback Update

Hi Doug,

I hope everything is going well with the new Flashback. How about giving us an update. Are you going to have a brushless motor option? I like when planes are specifically designed for certain motors. I'm not very good at choosing or mounting the motors. I'd rather have an expert do it for me.

Thanks,

steve

Steve,

With the NEAT fair a week away, I'm down to the wire. I received some sample canopies and cowls today and approved them. I made one last design change and am building a fuselage to test the change. I plan to bring two Flashbacks to NEAT, one with a Speed 480 race motor and one with a geared Mega 16/15/4. A beta tester should also be there with a Hacker powered FB.

I think I will take Friday off from my day job...

Doug

Sounds good. I sure wish I could make it to the NEAT fair. Perhaps next year.

I recived my Flash Back yesterday in the mail. I looks like a pretty quick build. I laser cutting is awesome. I will start building either to night or tomorrow. I just got in from my club meeting. I was there an extra long time because I just could not stop myself from flying my hacker powered fun fly in the parking lot under the lights with three batteries all charged up. I will probably post some comments on the build as I go but no promises. I have a lot to do before NEAT. John Tracey

Well.... I turned the wife down and.... I have the fuse and the tail feathers built. I am starting on the wing. This thing sure goes together fast. I am building without plans because I got my kit sooo early that the plans were not available. It needed to be that way in order for me to have the plane ready to go in time for NEAT. I do have a PDF of the plans. So far this model has just falen together so plans are not neccessary. The wing may be a little tricky by not having the plans to build on but the trailing edge give me the rib spacing so I will just transfer that to the leading edge. OK Back to the board! Whipp! Whip!!! John Tracey

Wow John! About 2-3 hours to build the frame!! That plane did fall together. Hope you didn't wake the wife up when you went to bed!

Can you post a pic or two as you go along?
Thanks!!
Don

I mentioned this before: the Flashback builds a lot faster than the Switchback.

I also need to mention that these are two different planes. The FB is faster and heavier and will need more room to fly unless you are really good, not like me. The wing loading is higher so it needs a longer run before takeoff - maybe 20 - 30 feet.

The FB, however, does nice pattern work.

Doug,

Looking forward to getting and flying this plane. Since flying the SB 3D, it's hard to imagine that the FB will be a 'nicer' flying plane . Sounds like a good home for a Mega.... Oh yeah, 'room' where I fly is not a problem .

Doug, what is the battery compartment dimensions? Where I am going with this is the new LithPoly batteries sized 3.7" X 2.5" X .2". Would they fit? Going to measure my SB tonight -- but I have my doubts for the SB..... If they don't fit in the FB, you 'might' want to consider 'widening' the fuse a bit to account for this new upcoming technology if not to late!!!

The battery compartment width is 2". It is very long and very deep. I bet your pack will fit in if you angle it. Will it deliver 12-14 amps?

According to the LithPoly thread these batteries should deliver 4C (read 6C somewhere) -- so that's about 12A for a 3270mah cell -- okay for the SB, but maybe on the edge for the FB..... But at 2.2 oz per cell (the above dimension is for 1 battery cell); need only stack 2 maybe 3 at most (3.7V per cell)...... Hmmmmm......
