Post your budget E plane set ups.

with all the inexpensive motors, esc, and lipos/emoli/a123 power systems out there , i thought i would be interesting to see how inexpensive E flight can be. If you can , try to post your savings compared to using premium brand power systems.

For any 400 size DD plane you have :

$10 400 6V motor
$25 12A ESC
$16 750 9.6v NiHm Battery (buy how many packs for 1 LiPo pack?)

$51 Total

Add $15 for gearbox if necessary....

Compare that against your 'premium' brushless systems, say Mega 1615/5 at $94.90 + .....

Since I already have several brushed ESCs and batteries it usually comes done to buying a $10 motor which will last over a 150 flights at least.... About as cheap as you can get! For planes like the ES*, Funky Chicken, Simple 400, etc. This is all the power you need.... Plus you can afford several packs and charging them at the field is fairly fast.... So fly all day....

Current Project:

Ultra stick 40 $140
HXT50-52B $41.50
HexTronic 60A ESC $27.50
4 * HexTronic 3s 2200 mAh as 6S2P 4*$32 = $128
Hitec Receiver & Crystal ~$60
HS-425BB 6 * $15 = $90

Kind of a funny experience: I ordered at the same day the motor, battery and ESC with United Hobbies in HK, the servos/receiver from servocity.com and the US 40 at the LHS. I received the servos/rec. after 4 days, the motor etc after 10 days, and could pick up the US ARF after 4 weeks.

I hope the maiden will be in the next 2-3 weeks....

I have found the cheapest power systems at www.rchotdeals.com 14 bucks or so for a brushless. Battery and speed control are good too. One kit has a free motor.

I've been using some gear from this place (probably of no interest to American readers):

Even if I wanted to I doubt I could buy brushed power systems as cheap.

I've had a couple fun planes on the cheap.

First one I had a sheet of foam and some cheap gear laying around. I had gotten some little lipos on sale at FMA. And a buddy didn't like the blue arrow 4.3g servos, and I bought em from him for 5 bucks each. I had also gotten some electronics at an estate sale, mostly Gws servos, receivers and motors.

1/2 sheet of foam $2.50
5A Gws Esc $5.00
IPS $5.00
4 micro servos $20.00
Gws 6CH Rx w/ crystal $7.00
Kokam 340mA $10.00
Total $49.50

It flew very well, even had flaps. It finally met its demise when I moved last April, crunch. The IPS was plenty of power for something this small and you can get them new for like $10. A small brushless would have been a lot better, but a light cdrom like Westport, is $35. And a CC 10 is around $50. So by looking around for sales and local bargains, I had the airframe and all the components for the price of a good small brushless esc.

Low priced Warbird

Here is my Hellcat. I build them myself from 2" foam. I use the outrunners and ESC from Gorilla bob and batteries from common sense
Motor $37
ESC $30
2000 8C $23
I use 2 expensive $23 Hitech HS-81MGs, but only because I fly combat, cheap $8 servos would fly it.

Compare to a premium brushless system? Why? This is a budget thread. Add another ten bucks to your motor cost- nice BP12 or better. Double your pack cost and you can get a 3S 2200 mah pack from UH... Hell, a 620 pack is only like $13... Worth the tiny bit of extra cash? I think so, especially for the insane power increase.

My fave budget setup for sp400 stuff is the $14 gws geared motor with a blue arrow 15A lipo esc for $13 on $18 common sense 3s 1250 batts.

If you spend 5 minutes to retime the motor, you will have a setup that will turn a gws 11x7 prop at 5200 rpm at only 7.5 amps and 79 watts getting 21 oz thrust.

I use this setup on all sort of planes with excellent results and very long motor life.

Not bad at all for $45.

This is my cheapest ever.

servos 2xHS55 off Ebay.
Kit off Ebay.
Motor and ESC off ebay,

Juts needed to buy a new prop and use a spare old etech 1200 3s pack I had already.

And some covering film..

6x3 folder,. speed 400 7.2v. Not really suitable for prolonged use as it gets hot..but a 30 second burst gets me up a couple of hundred feet easily.
