A123's are the new 3.6 volt Lithium Nano-Phosphate batteries that come inside the DeWalt 36 volt cordless power tools. Each cell is 3.6 volts nominal with a 2300mah capacity. They are capable of 30C continuous discharge rates (69 amps) with bursts to 40C (92 amps). They weigh 70 grams per cell for loose cells, and around 73 grams per cell with the welded tabs.

If cared for properly they can deliver at least 1000 charge cycles, and if you keep the current draw down to under 10C, 2000 charge cycles are possible. They have a solid aluminum outer can, so they can take bumps and bruises that would destroy a Li-Po battery.

I did a How-To thread on how to disassemble one of the DeWalt packs to harvest the cells a few weeks ago. Here is a link to that thread for more information.

Disassembly of a DeWalt 36v battery pack

A 3-cell A123 pack has an open circuit voltage of 3.6 volts per cell or 10.8 volts, which makes it about the same as the open circuit voltage of a 8-cell Ni-MH pack. The cells weigh 73 grams each with solder tabs, so 3 cells weighs 209 grams, and by the time you tape it up and add a power lead, it will weigh around 220 grams or 7.75 ounces. The A123 cells have a capacity of 2300mah. 2300mah Sub-C Ni-MH cells weigh around 2 ounces each, so an 8-cell pack of these would weigh about a pound. This makes the A123 pack about 1/2 the weight of Ni-MH cells.

It looks like the A123's would be a big step up from Ni-MH cells!

I fly my Formosa II with three Emoli cells, a TP2908 and a GWS 1170 prop. With three A123 cells you would need a slightly hotter motor because the voltage is lower.

Some where in between. It climbs straight up to the limit of sight, but not real fast. In level flight it is fast enough; the seven inch pitch probably helps. I haven't timed any flights. I would guess over ten minutes, but it could be less. I don't run the batteries to cut off.

Your paying 3x the cost to get that run time. You can charge these Cells in as little as 10-15 minutes. Have a couple of theses packs and you can fly, Charge fly non stop. Just land and rotate packs.
