Just to keep this all in one place. Here's a close up of the flying wires.

I drilled tiny holes in the ends of the outer struts and rear of two on each side at the rear of the inner struts. And made a thin strip from the scrap strut plastic to glue to the lower wing doubler to anchor the wires there. You can see one end in the wing saddle.

I used dental floss and string it from the outside strut, through the inner attachment and back to the other corresponding outside, then wrap it once around the strut and apply a drop of CA to the string on the strut, but not in the hole (makes it easy to change or adjust).

It's not really necessary but I was going for sorta scale so added the X cross strings on the outer struts too.

PT17 for Basket case

Dear Basketcase,

Why wait for a Stearman. Do it yourself.

Here's a picture

Nice Stearman

Mr. Basketcase,....

Very nice stearman. I hope it gives you much pleasure.
It is fortunate to work with an actual Stearman kit.

I did try to round the fuselage of the Tigermoth to make it look more real but not as much as yours.

I did cover the underside of the wings with saran wrap, added numerous flying light LEDs and rounded the wing tips.

It is still a Tigermoth though.

I did finish a model that is what it is supposed to be...

This AVRO triplane has a Hacker and flies real well

Belgy, looks good. Have to get 'em up together and dogfight some more.

Wan2Fly, your AVRO is beautiful! Very nice. The Stearman is a Robbe Stearman kit from Hobby Lobby that has been discontinued. (It wasn't that great of a kit)

Mr Lin has said that GWS will produce a Stearman that I'm sure will be a better plane than the Robbe.

Dreamer, thanks. As nice as the Cessna is I just can't risk flying tree trunk slalom and other stupid stunts with it the way I can with the 'moth.

Basketcase: Guru of the Moth

Just got my Moth and have looked at your mods, kool. I got this used with L-ion batteries, decent flying time: 20 min with juice left. The plane seemed underpowered. It is stock with a heat sink.

Question: 1) What batteries are you using, NiCad or NiMh?
2) Is there an upgrade to the motor?

Thank you for your help in making this a better flyer.

motors

the moth is a slowflyer....and it truly lives up to that gender

it will fly with an eps300c but you won't be able to use the lith ion batteries due to amp draw

i just tried a 280bb ferite with mpj gb @4to1 with no luck it seems that motor gearbox was too heavy in the nose and i just couldn't get COG right not to mention that it just didn't seem to have any kind of speed (tried an apc 8x6 prop)

folks are saying M-100 is the way to go in other threads so i have one on the way.....

Hi Fred, thanks.

1. I use the 370mah 7 cell NiMH packs from www.aeromicro.com . I have some of the QC 830's and don't really care for them in the 'moth. To me it seems like every minute past 15 or so is the last minute, and I have to baby it around, like you I usually land before the LI pack is drained. It's just too boring flying with no power. The 7 MH's give it enough pep to fly well for 15 minutes. The MH's also have enough power to fight a little bit of wind.

I know there are a lot of LI fans who will disagree with me on this, so the usual disclaimer applies. Your milage may vary.

Also, how old is your motor? As the brushes wear out they gradually lose power, so slight that at first you think you're imagining it, then one day it just won't fly anymore. I get about 15 to 20 hours out of a IPS motor. A new one always gets it flying nice again.

2. The most common upgrade, and one that will still let you use the LI's is the M100 as Belgy mentioned. You have to move the mounting stick to the hole where the wires go if you want to still use the cowl. Reportedly works very well.

In my first moth I installed a EPS 300-C, and use 8x720mah NiMH's. It makes it a totally different plane, so much so that I bought the second moth because I missed the slow flying. Can't decide which I like better so now have two Tigermoths.

So many nice Tiger moth paint schemes! Where do you get the decals from? (instead of the using the stock stickers from GWS)

thanks,

Hey BC, I have a real quick question.

After rebuilding my TM many times, I have lost track of where the CG is supposed to be. How far back from the lower wing LE is it?

Thanks a million.

Thomas, the roundels came from my LHS, they are made by SIG. The colors on the tail of the yellow moth are individually cut strips of Scotch vinyl tape.

The TM Squadron stickers are printed on adhesive address labels.

John, the CG is 35 to 45mm back from LE.
