Dragonfly Strong

I just ordered this from Soaring USA. What a great bunch of folks!
You can tell that they understand customer service.
Now I have to just be patient for a few days, which is not in my nature.
I will post pics and flight data when I get it going.

This looks interesting. Would you guys mind posting build pics as you go?
I have built a lot of planes but nothing like this. I have a great place to fly a bird like this. If I am up to the build.
Thanks
Fred

While you wait, how about a link to the plane. And tell us why you chose this plane. What attracted you to it and what you hope it will do for you?

Bob is a great guy, and SUSA has superior service. I'm a big fan of Valenta Models: they have a lot of "bang for the buck". I have a Valenta Capuccino that I have been very happy with and I waited 2 months for it!!

Let us know how she goes.

I just looked at this ship. I really like it. How is it made? is it built up around the cf spar or bagged... molded, maybe??? I couldn't tell from the info I saw. I might have to have one for Christmas... and I don't usually even like ARF stuff...

Why I picked this plane...

I have entered a few competitions and have flown against Ava's, Pikes, the Sharon 3.7m and the Saphire to name a few. To me (and keep in mind I am a newbie competition pilot, but have flown a great deal and teach new pilots quite a bit. I have solo'd about 7 pilots this year.)the plane needed to be strong, thermal well, fast for getting back on time, able to range far afield and still make it back, and sturdy.

I also wanted to jump to a full house ship. As I have looked around I wanted to get to this point without breaking the bank or getting a divorce. I was planning to take this step in the spring, but Sunday I blew up my Thermic 2.5m from Arthobby and needed to make a move. My wife (bless her heart) was a trooper and went along with the plan.

I looked at Pike's and the Sharon 3.7 because I liked the design. When I found this I was pretty excited. It offers a lot of the advantages of the high end planes (minus of course the composite wing) at a price that was possible for me to pull off. I think I will have a struggle with my current radio set up, but I will make do with what I have. The airfoil offered is (as I understand) a pretty aggressive one and I think if I set this up carefully it will at least allow me to ease into this whole competition thing and push my ranking up a bit.

Plus I think it is a dead sexy aircraft.

Hey Tom,
You're right about the MH-32 airfoil. It may be an aggresive airfoil but it will linger and float as well in light lift. I'm flying an Onyx LT at 62-63oz. and take advantage of this alot, but... I can use it's speed to range and get back. The Strong should have the same capabilies(specs are nice) and it's gonna be way easier to repair if it gets busted...

Manufacturer V. J. V. VALENTA MODEL
Wing span 3 500 mm
Elevator span 680 mm
Lenght 1 500 mm
Aerofoil MH 32
Elevator profil NACA 009
Wing area 68 dm2
Elevator area 7,5 dm2
FIying weight - glider 2 000 g ( 74.4 ounces )
Wing Ioading glider 29,4 g/dm2

Can someone convert the wing area and wing loading for me?

The MH32 airfoil has had a very good following. The Agea, and I belive the original Mantis, had MH32 airfoils. I fly in the Eastern Soaring League and they have been very popular with pilots in the ESL. wwwlflyesl.com

Liberator, your story sounds similar to mine but you may have more experience. I have been flying for about 3.5 years, do a lot of training of new pilots, though most are on small electric planes. I have been flying ESL contests for 2 years but have not been real serious about it. This year I moved from an old Airtronics Legend ( 2.9M and 78 ounces) to a bagged wing plane at 3.1M and 58 ounces. What a difference!

Best of luck with the new plane. I know I will be following the build!
