NOTBill Gates 11 Rules

Got this in an email yesterday . . . good advice!!!
Quote:
Bill Gates did not recently give a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He doesn't talk about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually
have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Snoped ...................AGAIN!

Quote:
This list is the work of Charles J. Sykes, author of the book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can't Read, Write, Or Add. (The list has appeared in newspapers, although not necessarily in this book.) Many versions omit the last three rules:

Rule No. 12: Smoking does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you're out cruising, watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That's what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for "expressing yourself" with purple hair and/or pierced body parts.

Rule No. 13: You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven't seen one of your peers at room temperature lately.

Rule No. 14: Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school's a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you'll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You're welcome.

Because it wasn't written by Bill Gates!

The original attributing of these trite little missives of folk wisdom to successful figures in order to lend them an air of credibility is intellectually dishonest.

It takes just a second to check the veracity of this sort of drivel as it dribbles out of one's email inbox, if that is where it really does originate.

Making that little check avoids making oneself look bad. Repeatedly.

How difficult is this to understand?

It's not a question of making me feel better, it's a question of your own credibility.

Can't you see that?

Every time you do this it just makes you look more ridiculous.

The message is a trite series of folky over simplifications about teenagers that parents can probably relate to, at least some part of the list.

Our own parents would have probably been able to related to an amended version of that list.

Their parents likewise and our grandchildren will probably also be able to relate to their generation's version of the list.

Bill Gates won't have written any of them and they will all have similar degrees of credibility.

Interesting thing is that few of Bill Gate's children nor their children for a dozen generations will have to be concerned about any of those "rules", unless they chose to be.

Viper, have you no shame? The sentiment behind that is: We were sexually humiliated when we were hazed, so should you. We persevered through snow uphill both ways, stop snivelling. What is your message, opportunity left the building, get used to it?

No, it did not leave the building. Opportunity still abounds for those who choose to prepare for it. For those who have been on welfare for generation after generation, their "gimme . . . get paid" philosophy keeps them in the basement. For those who strive for achievement, opportunity will reward them.

So your message is the same as say, Bill Bennet? We need to bring back stigma. Those that dont succeed, should be ashamed. No excuses. You made it, so better they. That is some mean spirited intention there. Not that one might harbor those ideas, but that they would care enough to post it. Then after it has been declared a fraud, you still push it. Why?

Quotes from Bill Gates about striving for achievement:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I'd skip out on athletics and go down to this computer center. We were moving ahead very rapidly: Basic, FORTRAN, LISP, PDP-10 machine language, digging out the operating system listings from the trash and 'studying' those."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

WSJ: You watch physics lectures and Harlem Globetrotters [on YouTube]?
Gates: This social-networking thing takes you to crazy places.
WSJ: But those were stolen, correct?
Gates: Stolen's a strong word. It's It's copyrighted content that the owner wasn't paid for. So yes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Microsoft's innovative ways (``simply rewrite the stolen software his way . . . and get it on the market'')
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Where are my sources? Reliability? What's the point? WHO CARES!

Life is what we make it. We can direct all our efforts to benefit ourselves or we can use our over-abundance to help all. Or do something between the poles....
