Detailing Slofly's EPP Foamies With Decal Paper

A number of people have expressed an interest in the method I used to detail my Slofly kits. I have never been very successful with spraying, so I decided to try using inkjet printable waterslide transfer paper. Credit for the idea goes to RCAV8R13 who used a similar method last year for his scratchbuilt Sirocco 2 Bipe (possibly the best looking foamie I have ever seen!). The difference being that I cover the airframe after the build is complete rather than before cutting the parts out of foam.

The decal paper used below was sourced from BelDecal.com. Four sheets of 11"x17" Clear were used for the Mini 3D 28", and three sheets for the Micro 3D 22".

Due to my models already being built and covered, the instructions below were done using a separate Mini 28" horizontal stab and elevator. The same method is used on a completed model.

I hope some of you find this useful.

VERY Cool! I've thought about trying the same thing but with self-adhesive vinyl decals. Problem is, I can't seem to find a source for clear vinyl ink-jet printable self adhesive sheets. Would you know of a source?

Thanks DT. I also looking into using adhesive labels, but the biggest size I could find were 8 1/2" x 11" which was too restrictive. They would also be heavier, and need covercoating with a clear laquer to make them waterproof. If you fancy giving them a try, they can be purchased from Amazon.com here

Another good one! I'm adding this to my "tips and tricks" post, firetrappe.

I likey the fact that this is easy and light. I don't think you can get this light using an airbrush (I know I couldn't - or as nice ). It must be a pain for you, but it's nice to have that decal manufacturer over here on this side of the Atlantic.

A friend of mine is into rubber powered indoor stuff. He prints graphics directly onto Japanes tissue. He does this by taping the tissue to a sheet of printer paper to help it through the printer. he also sets his printer on the lowest ink values to prevent bleeding. The reuts are very good.

This tissue idea could possibly be used to make a decal to apply over foam I think.

BTW where do you get the decal paper?

I tried thin tissue taped around the sides on paper and it turned into a mess.
How do you tape it on?
The decal paper is waterproof and at beldecal.com
I've ordered 50 sheets and have some 5 packs if interested here:

Thanks Fire!!

This is so easy I only need to worry about what to put on the decal.

If you have any graphic files to post please do.
Any links to stuff to print on decal paper for the plane would be great!

Decals rip and I mean it not literally!

1*0=0 and boolean logic says that 1+1=1 because + is inclusive or.
A Karnauff map deduces this to the most simple terms.
To ask what this means is to use reason to ask about the algorithms of reason.
If this does not tickle you sky blue study inductive, deductive logic, Socrates, Boolean Algebra and Karnauff Maps. All directly related to RC
Google.com is the oracle of 70's TV use it!
Now that we are clear where is all the decal talk taking place?
Oh I can just google it....
