Why yes, it is important. The plans show it at 2.16 to 2.52 inches back from the leading edge of the wing. So, start at just forward of the venter of the spar.

A good "rule of thumb" as a starting point is 25% of the wing chord from the leading edge of the wing, i.e., if the wing's chord is 10", then the CG is roughly 2.5" measured from the leading edge of the wing back towards the trailing edge of the wing.

I bought one of these when they first came out, Sept 2006, according to the start of this thread.

I built the fuse right away and it sat in bare bones, then I moved and the nose was ripped off at the front of the windshield...and it hung from a hook in my basement for 2 years all crinkled and sad.

Pulled it down today and put the nose back on, glassed the repair with some 1/2 oz cloth and am waiting for the epoxy to dry.

I have not built a kit in at least 2 years so I am psyched to make some sawdust.

I can't wait, I think I will build light, using gear on hand.

I still fly mine regularly (although not as much since I recently finished my Mountain Models P-51 ). I've got the clipped wing. My AUW is about 18oz and it flies great. I'm using a 400XT, APC 8x3.8SF prop, and 1300mAh 3S lipo. More power than it needs and I could use a smaller battery. After a fairly agressive 10 minute flight, it's usually used less than 600mAh of the pack.

This is a great plane, as are all of Brian's designs. It's great for touch-and-go's too.

The lightest one I built was 13.4 and the heaviest I made was 15.5 ounces.

13.4 was by using So-Lite and 15.5 was using SolarFilm. Even though I never made one heavier than 15.5, I'm sure it flies great at up to 18 ounces or so.

Man, that's even slower than me!

I don't know about the regular Cub, buy I regularly do knife edge from one end of the field to the other with my clipped wing. I don't do 3D, so other than that I can't say.

Well I couldn't afford it but I couldn't pass it up either. I snagged a MM J3 kit off the RCG classifieds for a great price. It just got here today. I won't be starting on it for a while but I always like to gather up needed bits and pieces and keep them with a kit until built. Luckily the hardware package Brian provides is very complete and high quality so I won't be replacing much if any of that. I will be putting servos, motor and ESC away with the kit though. Since it will be slow flying and lightweight I think I'll use the light and tiny HS-45HB's that I've had laying around NIB forever. I'm sure they'll work just fine at this light weight and slow speed. I also have a Scorpion 2205-32 motor and CC Micro10 ESC. Will probably fly on 2S 800-1000 packs. I'm hoping that's going to be enough motor. If not I've got a few 2212-22's. Also a Hobby Lobby 400XT. I could do a geared setup as well. I also have a NIB Spektrum 6100e RX. Because I won't be flying a long way out I'm hoping to put that RX to use finally.

I've been wanting a lightweight Super Cub and MAY look into cutting flaps into the wing. I haven't even looked at the plans though so I might just go ahead and build it as designed for once.

Good choice Joe. You'll like this one (I think we can say that about all of Brian's designs though )

I'm using HS-55's for the tail and GWS Naro's for the ailerons. The HS-45's should be plenty I think, but you will probably need to adjust the servo mounts in the wings. They are pretty tight for the Naro servos and I the 45's are a little different dimension. It shouldn't take much adjustment though.

I suspect the 2205-32 will be plenty. I've got a 400XT in mine spinning an APC 8x3.8 on 3S, which gives me about 90W full throttle, althrough about 1/3 throttle is all it takes to cruise around. I'm also using an original AR6000 Rx in mine, that or the 6100 will take the plane farther than you can see it.

I just realized I've been flying mine for 4 years now! No wonder my batteries aren't putting out the power the used to... Enjoy the smooth touch and goes and long, slow sideslips...

In my last MM J-3 I used sub 5 ounce Dymond D47 servos, which is what I'll be using in my MM L-4. These cubs are unreal, and yep, you can build them to about 13 ounces. Not bad for a 48" wingspan plane!

Thanks guys. I've built just about everything from Mountain Models except the Cub because I already had Herr and Hyperion Cubs. When I saw this kit for a good price I went ahead and bit. The MM Cub is going to weigh half what the others do and probably look a lot better too....

Joe, I used a Skatty 400XT in my original Cub. Had more than enough power. Anything in the 80-100 watt range is going to be just fine for you.

You might ask Brian about a Super Cub cowl.....
