GREAT looking build you've got going on there! I have no experience with the 400XT but I felt compelled to comment on such a nice looking Cub!

Glenn, I used the 400XT in my beta. I don't recall any problems clearing the cowling. But I was using a collet type prop adatper, rather than the prop saver type. Maybe that put the prop out far enough. My suggestion would be to put some washers between the motor and the ply mount to move it forward. Alternatively, perhaps you could slide the cowl back down the fuselage a bit more.

Let us know how you make out!

Thanks aeronca, I know it can be built quite quickly but I've been taking my time on it.

Mark , I'll locate a collet adapter to see if if that will work. I thought of maybe heating up the cowl a bit to widen it some as well, I sanded the balsa pretty good around fuselage to make sure it would fit before I covered the fuse, once covered with the So-Lite it just didn't slide on as far.

I'll keep ya posted,

Found one, it was right above my head the whole time I pulled it off my old Sig Lil Rascal that is not the prop Im using just a test fit and it will work and just monkying around with that HZ S Cub cowling but what if

It could work but you would have to remove about 3/4" of cowling right down the center and mate it back together, with a little re-work I think it could be done , If ya mess one up it's only 2 bucks and change

Super Cub!

I think that Super Cub cowl looks excellent! I have a MM J3 Cub kit waiting to be built but would really, really like to make it into a Super Cub. I think for the the $2 investment, it's worth a try.

Is there any visible difference on the Super Cub vs. the J3 besides the cowl and flaps?

Scott, There are several differences. By the way, not all Super Cubs had flaps. Most if not all of the early 95 horsepower ones didn't have them. There is also quite a bit of variation in the cowls amongst the Super Cubs. Most of the later ones had the rounded, tapered tunnel on the bottom that housed the air cleaner.

From the windshield pillars forward, the fuselage is shaped differently. The J-3 is wider at the top, where the Super Cub is about as wide at the top as at the bottom. The Super Cub has a lot less taper from the windshield forward to the nose.

The skylight at the top of the cabin is much larger on the Super Cub.

The Super Cub rudder is rounder at the rear, and a little more pointy at the top.

The Super Cub also has balancers on the ends of the elevators where the J-3 elevators terminate straight out from the hinges.

Most Super Cubs have propeller spinners, most J-3s don't.

Some of the later Super Cubs have metal flaps and ailerons.

I'll try to post some Pic's to show some of the differences.

Scott, I've been through a conversion sort of like this. I converted a Dare 60" J-3 kit to a Super Cub. There is a long-winded thread about it, (and much else), over in the "Scale Electric Planes" Forum.

The week I put the finishing touches on my cub! The plane had already flown 4 or 5 times by the time I took these pictures. I wanted to make sure I got all the kinks-out of the plane before applying the graphics.

The plane is your basic MM J-3 cub with the full 48" wing. For covering I used dark yellow solarfilm. LED marking/strobe lights on the wing tips with controllable landing lights. Balsa bungee bags on the gear and ping-pong wheel covers add a bit of detail. Vinyl graphics by Callie.

Power is supplied by a CustomCDR cool-wind single via a Phoenix 25 controller using a 2s 1300 Loong-Max battery and a 9060 prop. Receiver is a Berg 7P with 2 HS-55 and 2 GWS Pico servos.

The plane's empty weight is a portly 14.0 oz with the AUW of 16.8 oz. Unfortunately, the plane came out a bit heavier than I wanted (too many options), but it still seems to fly fine.

The first few flights were ROG, but generally the grass is a bit high at my field for this plane so lately I've just been hand-launching it. My field is kinda small, so the big worry for me was whether the plane would be nimble enough at low speeds to feel comfortable in flight. No problem. Usually I just roll the plane a bit and use the very effective rudder to complete the turn.

Even with just the 2s pack, I'm still only cruising around at 1/2 throttle. For any more aerobatics beyond simple loops some more power would be required, which is easily obtained with a change to a 3s 1000 mAh pack and a 8040 prop. So far, though, I'm completely happy with the low, slow and looking good flying for which this plane seems very well suited.

I still consider myself a "noob" with balsa planes, but I consider this an excellent kit for beginners. You get good instructions and a very complete kit.

Very nice plane! If that is your noob work I can't wait to see what you do a few builds from now! I like the lights too.
