And yes, diff thrust is useable in the air, steerable nosewheel is not. I wanted to do it just to have some semblance of rudder for cross wind landings.
Using two mixes as described above is exactly how I have differential thrust on my GWS A-10 set up.

Only if you want the nosewheel steering as well. Plug one ESC to throttle, the other one to rudder, and use the mixes above.

The nosewheel is harder, and does indeed take 3 mixes. Try this:

Mix rudder 100% to channel 5, (probably with 50% offset). This should have channel 5 mirroring the rudder channel exactly.

Then mix CH5 to throttle and throttle to CH5. ESCs go in 5 and throttle, nosegear still goes in the rudder channel.

If you can disable the gear switch (I can assign it to another function, for example), then do. Bumping that switch in flight would be very bad...

Nice pics. Boards sure have quieted down a bunch after the initial earlybird rush. Any word on shipments of these to hobby stores in the US? Horizon Hobby is showing early November availability. Tower hobbies shows mid November (and is 6 dollars cheaper too!)

I would say first shipments should be on LHS shelves by Thanksgiving at the latest. But, be sure that these initial shipments will most likely sell out fast. I would talk to an LHS owner who has these ordered, and ask them to call you as soon as they come in.

We're having a large fly-in here at the end of January. I convinced one of the LHS owners to order a supply of these kits and offer them for sale during the show. There are two of us with P-38s signed up as pilots for the show, so we will be showing them off. He'll probably sell out the first day.

I don't have mine in hand yet!

I have been wondering about the tail of the GWS-38... I know there's some kind of piece at the tail which makes the tail removable for transportation -- is there a modification which makes it more permanent (both stronger and nicer looking)?

Guy,

The tailplane simply slides into slots in the vertical stab. The vert stab has small plastic "tabs" that protrude inwards, and rest on the top and bottom of the tailplane. The bottom tab has a nut and you simply secure everything together with a single screw.

For a more permanent installation, leave the tabs off and just epoxy the tailplane into the vert stab slots, and then fill in the gaps. I have a kit that is disassembled at home and will take pics of it tonight to show you what I'm describing.
