There are all kinds of methods you can use to get a good paint job. Filling the pores with a mixture of wood puddy thinned with water will work. This requires a lot of sanding after it dries to smooth it out. Or you can mix 50/50 water based wood puddy powder with water based spackle powder. That also works. And it is a lot more work to fill in the pores before painting. Iv'e used both methods and I sometimes wonder if it's worth all of the time and trouble. You're going to fly it. From 50 feet away you can't tell if the pores have been filled or not. PLUS you'll be adding weight to the model which is not an advantage with electric powered planes. If you're going to build it for static display, go crazy with a fine paint job and all kinds of detail work, but for flying, that's a different story.
