I'm going to wait before putting everything together to see how the "masters" do theirs... I'm sure they will inspire me to make a change or two. Only problem is most people's landing gears aren't beefy enough for my kind of flying!!! The kind where you are constantly fixing bent music wire after landing!

Changes I made, FWIW...

Not sure they are good or bad, but anyway, here's where I am:

- elevons = 4" chord
- rudder = 4" chord (hinge line parallel to TE)
- fuse sides end just past TE of wings, and single layer tail is sandwiched w/ 4" overlap
- top and bottom nose skin cut separate from wings (width of fanfold is only 23")

Right now, I'm gluing the ply firewall over the foam firewall & nose skins. I poked some holes in the foam and am using ProBond w/25% Elmers & a drop of blue paint.

Top wing on (needed it for the tail position).

3mm tubes in both wings w/ hot glue, bottom one 1/2" ahead of elevon hinge line, top one butted to back of former slot.

Once firewall is dry, I'll glue the bottom wing on and cut some access hatches on the bottom. Still studying how I will mount the landing gear, but I know it will be fiberglass rods criss-crossed somehow. I need to have both wings on to get a good idea what's the best way. It will be a wide-track, though, for ground stability.

I'm going to start off with a GWS 2208/18T on 3s with a 9050HD prop. s/b about 70w, 14.5oz, 32mph... Depending on the finished weight, it may need more motor

Prop-er,

I flew my new DD today (20" version with new fuse design). I had some balance problems with the small motor that you are using. The only way I could get it to fly right is to throw gravel into the front compartment (I know, stupid). I don't know what the solution is. I hate to add weight, but can't move the battery any farther forward because of the former. Was your plane really tail heavy?? I can't wait to see Gene's 150%!!

Thanks,
Mark

Was this going to be an indoor capable version? It isn't much fun flying outside in the Winter in Minnesota.

Mark,

Mine was tail-heavy. It flew great once I had sorted out the throws and expo.

Still added three chunks of fishing lead. I guess it was close to 50 grams total extra weight right up front in the nose. It helped for stable flying in the strong winds.

You can make a hole in the former, so you can place the battery more forward. Dont worry about strength. It's by far strong and stiff enough.

Gene,

You were supposed to glue the fuse side templates together, and cut them out of foam as one side piece... I've drawn the templates this way to save you all a good two to three extra pages...

But I like your pics very much!

Now, go out and trash it!

Yea, I deviated on the sides for no great reason. It was just an idea I had... Sometimes I stop to think and forget to start again

It would have been easier to do the double thickness tail. Less chance of introducing a warp as well. That's how I did it on my 20", and it was simple and easy. I just thought since I was using a rudder on this one, I'd try it this way. Really didn't save any weight, just complicated it.

And, yes, this one is for slow flying. If it doesn't fly that well, adding horsepower and weight are easy!

Looks good Gene! Prop-er, I'll move the battery forward and adjust my rates some. I had a lot of throw also, no D/R set up.

Thanks,
Mark
