EJF Big F(oamy)/A-18

I was contacted by EJF (Robert) to build the 8Teen. Since I am one of the Hornets biggest fan I happily agreed. This was on the 7/31 and today it arrived!

I opened the box and he included two 90mm fans and the EJF Economy Pneumatic retracts. While the building won't actually start until late in the weekend the product looks really good. Also included were some cool EJF decals. Here is a my initial peek at it.

I have a couple of options that I am looking at but I won't know until I look it the model closely and determine what structural mods will be required to achieve decent performance, affordable (with EDF we use that term loosely) and easy of construction. I will say that nothing going on will be top secret, I will share it all good and/or bad.

For instance, the wing attachment/spar has a priority of 1. Horizontals attachment is 2. Calculating or proving CG which dictates the placement of fans, batteries and landing gear just to name a few.

Still examining the model.

I didn't receive any instruction with mine but I did locate the locations for the spars and it appears that .25" diameter rod/tube would be ideal.

Thanks RCP!

It is late weekend and I have looked at the model more.

Firstly as it sits the intakes can feed a pair 90mm fans but the outlets aren't large enough....by a long shot.

I then looked at the twin Minifan 480 size.
The intake area is there but the minimum exhaust for such a large draggy model is about 58-59mm, at least for me. The model has about 50-51mm.

The next step was to look at the doing it as a single high powered 90mm. This could work well and is something I discussed with Robert when I opened the box. A bifurcated 90mm exhaust is about 50-51mm.

Now it is possible the make new exhaust cone and get either the twin 90mm or the twin Minifan480 to work but that isn't the path I want to take.

What about cutting the stock exhaust nozzle off and using some sort of plastic cup of the right size? Maybe a margarine container or those plastic single serving cereal containers, or something else? People may look at you funny when you are measuring things in the store buy hey!

A single will make retracts easier as you know, wont have to rotate.

What about a single HW750? Is there enough room? If not then a HW730? Of course that size fan is hard to come by...

Parco,
Yes it can be done in all the configurations that you listed. It will depend mostly on the amount of money you want to spend and how much work you feel like putting into it.

Ed,
You are correct on the cup things...I already have them but I'm still looking at other options. I have a pair of 730s but I was hoping to do something that others could copy if they wanted too (you know how hard they can be to get). Since I really want retracts I not rushing into it. But keep your ideas coming man!

BTW, I have started to glue parts together .
