The smallest? I did one with a GWS DX50, and another with the same motor in a gearbox- the GWS IPS system. Had to build it light, and it couldn't take much wind, but flew just fine. As for batteries, I used a 6-cell 700mah NiMH, but a 2-cell 400mah Lipo would have worked.
A geared 280 is really all you need. Any 370/400-sized brushless motor is serious overkill for one of these planes, but that's part of the fun. I'm doing one as a trainer for my daughter; it'll sport a 400XT on a 3S 1500 Lipo.
