I got a 5 dollar foam gilder that I want to have fun with. I was thinking of a speed control and airlerons. ( 2 channel) This thing is really light. I remember a guy talking about converting one. What is the smallest motor, and LIpo battery pack could I use? I can use the great planes silver series electricfly ss-25 brushless motor contoller I have in another plane. I just want to have some fun and get it in the air and try to glide it.

The smallest? I did one with a GWS DX50, and another with the same motor in a gearbox- the GWS IPS system. Had to build it light, and it couldn't take much wind, but flew just fine. As for batteries, I used a 6-cell 700mah NiMH, but a 2-cell 400mah Lipo would have worked.

A geared 280 is really all you need. Any 370/400-sized brushless motor is serious overkill for one of these planes, but that's part of the fun. I'm doing one as a trainer for my daughter; it'll sport a 400XT on a 3S 1500 Lipo.

If going for overkill, I have a 400 motor with a gearbox and a 6 cell LIpo. Should I go lower in the battery, or can the plane take the weight?

Overkill? that's the understatement of the day.

Got this at ToysRus. Taped on two J-250's and use a lipo 2. Flyes great, looks good and a lot of fun. Had to put a spar across the top as the wings were folding up.

Funny. I just did a conversion this last sunday just for the fun of it. This is the second conversion I have done and I used an AXI 2505 along with a CC 10 two cheapo servos and I think I used a 450 mah 2 cell Lipo as the powere source. I was at my parents house like we always do on sunday so I didn't have my scale or anything to tell how much it weight but let me tell you this. The wings were very bent and it certainly didn't fly slowly. This was your typical Toy R Us 4 1/2 foot flyer. It was very fun although I must say that I was flying in way too small of an area so I was very surprised that I was able to do about 8 shorts flights before I smacked it into a pine tree 20 feet up. No real damage though. The pylon that I used to elevate the motor over the wing came out but it is an easy fix. I am going to take it out to a ballfield and let my 5 year old fly it. Having a 400 sized motor certainly won't overdue it speed wise but it sure will weight wise.

I made a flying wing out of mine... worked pretty good until I forgot to range check it and it glitched its way into a cracked spar. Just got it repaired and flying again though, now I got to make it pretty again. Used the ESC and servos from a Wing Dragon, and a speed 400.

"Can the plane take the weight?" Don't you mean "can the motor take the battery?" Or is that "6 cell Lipo" a typo?

A 400 motor and a 6 cell lipo will get you a puff of smoke.
