The best tip I got was "Take the time to do it right."

Then again, he was from a previous generation's previous generation. Not sure the young-uns today are ever given that opportunity in life and work. But we can do it in a hobby.

Anyone recommend a place to get good deals on a drill index with some really small drill bits?

yep, they are cheap and you will wear them dull if used too much, but for the 'many' times I need a specific number drill, they work and don't break the bank.
