A few props I have played with:

The 8040 works great - flight times for me were around 7-8 minutes on a 500mah battery.
For longer flight times and still good performance, I like the 7035 prop - about 10 minutes or so.
For even longer flight times yet, but slower - I like using a 5043 prop. I can easily git 13-14 minute flights with that and a 500mah battery, without being conservative on the throttle.

Hey Fer.. I totally agree with the other guys. I have a 2826 equivalent that I am putting on a Clancy Big Bee (60" span). I hope you just typed in the motor number when you posted. I will tell you that my current beater Swift has a 3s 1100 battery and an Emax 2812.. kinda big stuff for this wing but I also put 5 feet or so of LEDs (which pull from the main battery)..

On the swift in that video i took the 12v input direct from the Lipo battery before it got to the speed controller and stuck that across all the LEDs in parallel. In order for them not to burn out you need to stick a resister in series with each LED so it draws less current and has less voltage dropped across it. I couldn't work out the maths for that easily but the internet helped;

You stick in the voltage and the specification of the LED in question (given wherever you buy it from) and it gives you the ohms you need.

I've found a new method that might work better for some situations though. The biggest problem doing it previously was having to run 2 wires up each wing with all the LEDs in parallel on them. It means cutting and messing about with the wing a bit, although i'm sure if i did it again i'd get it neater.

If you just want a few LEDs and want them less permanently attached you can run an LED directly off a 3 volt watch battery (or two 1.5 volts in series). Unless you want loads of them in different spots, in which case the weight of the batteries may add up, this might even be lighter as you dont need wire.

It's also much simpler, the only thing you can get wrong is putting the LED in the wrong way round (assuming it's a 3volt LED) and then you just reverse it for correct polarity. I need to find a way to make a tiny case so i don't need to tape and untape it to turn it on and off and change the batteries but other than that it works great.

Telsahed thank you to, for your explention about the led's.

The thing is, i would like to build a flying wing (swift) with a couple of led strips for night flying and eventually be abel to carry fpv equipment (Maybe FCO3 + vid glasses) (or if anyone has a cheaper segetion for good FPV equipment????)

I'm wondering at the moment if it would be a better plan to get a swift maxy and use the hardware for that one?
would that be better for all the wait?

I'll keep you all updated...

For the record this one is massively overweight on a 1000mah 3 cell battery after being crashed repaired and glued for more than a year, and that was before i put the lights in it. It's not a slow flier anymore :-( Still looks pretty though.

I will admit it involved added risk but i am flying with a 6 inch prop - as long as i whip my hand away quickly enough i dont run into problems.

Having said that it only worked at the time. I've since added more lights and glue and now the plane doesn't have enough power to punch itself upwards and instead wobbles about dangerously at waist height for a second or so before hitting the ground.

teslahead, I saw that spinning trick in a video a couple weeks ago. Been meaning to try it but haven't thought of it while I've been out flying. Looks like you've got that down pat.

It's been going over a year, but I haven't showed off my Microdan/Swift, so here's a few videos of my swift from today's flying session:

Swift's make awesome video platforms. The extreme wind made it hard to get other angles, but there's some good shots of the Antioch bridge, the Sacramento delta, PG&E power plant, "beer building"... also got a few good lock's on my buddies aggressor swift.

Our 13oz AUW Microdan setups are fun on windy days like today. I've got handcatches down pretty good, but on a gusty 15+MPH day like today it wasn't happening. At the end of the onboard video you can see me lining up for a handcatch, a strong gust grabbed it, I miss by 3feet, and it ran straight in to that lightpole.

Setup for a Swift II

There are two motors that are basically identical. I donít have a preference and have used both on several different planes and it works great.

I go with the larger 9 gram servos just for the extra torque and a bit better throw. I need it when going slow. If your swift is built for speed, then you donít need as much throw really. But when going slow, less air over the control surfaces, the longer throws will help.

Or any 3S pack similar in weight. This will get the CG pretty much spot on with the other gear listed above. The 3S 750mah pack works also, but makes it a touch nose heavy, but is good in the wind.

A few other things I do differently.

1. Cut the servos holes out from the bottom and have the arms sticking through the top of the wing. I donít use the stock pushrods or control horns. I double z-bend heavy music wire like used on a slow stick for the push rods, or make carbon fiber push rods, and I use larger/taller control horns on the control surfaces. This makes it easier on the servo to push the surfaces and give me more throw.
2. Use Dubro Servo arm extensions to get more throw and I can burry the servo a bit deeper this way too. http://www.allerc.com/product_info.php?products_id=2087


That pretty much sums up my Swift II build. I use an AR6100 RX for my DX7 TX. I prefer the 6100E so I can burry the wires easier.

Swift II

I just ordered one of these up and went with the setup Diggs posted here. I flew Digg's Swift II with this set up and it flew like a dream!
I am not a very experienced RC pilot and we had at least 8-10 mph winds during some of our flights last weekend and this setup was solid.

Nice videos, looked like you were flying well despite the wind.

There isn't all that much to the spinning trick. All you have to have is a plane with a sufficiently good power to weight ratio that it will punch itself upwards from stationary and build up speed for the control surfaces to work before it hits the ground.

Other than that make sure you let go as the thing is leaning just slightly away from you and level in that direction just off the vertical. Whip your hand away pretty quickly so you don't get caught up in the prop (i never have done doing this but i don't do it carelessly). It should fly upwards and away from you slowly leveling out until you have enough speed and height for normal flight.

I've just started building a new swift style flying wing. I bought it from www.flyingwings.co.uk which sells a swift clone called the Raven which seems identical except that the cut outs for the electronics are on the top and it comes with a carbon fibre wing spar. I'll be writting a review so here are a few pictures of progress so far if anyone is interested;

I will be looking forward to that review teslahed - This (Swift) aircraft is the favorite that I have (least favorite being the Skyartec Cessna) - so anything that is close to this with possible improvements definitely interests me!
I didn't create an account on the site linked - but since I am on the other side of the pond, I am not sure if it would be cost prohibitive with shipping (hope not depending on what you find!)
