dago red-60 E-conversion

This is my first war bird conversion. The ARF kit just arrived by UPS this afternoon. The box is sure big.

The stang has a wing span of 65.2" and a weight of a bit over 8 lbs. It comes with retracts and requires servos for rudder, elevator, flaps, aileron, and retracts - five altogether.

Normally this plane would be flown with a 12x6 prop and .60 2cycle or .91 4-cycle.

I just got some 11x6x4-blade props APC glow (scale size) for my outrunner. The advantage of the 4-blade is that the prop won't mow the lawn on takeoffs. The outrunner would otherwise require a 14x10 prop, which would never fit with retracts and would not looks as cool.

I ordered a BM4230 which is just a bigger sized BM3520 to swing the 4-blade wihout gearing things down. This is not a 3D plane so I'll hold the power to 6S2P or 22V and 60A using 12 emoli cells and a TP65A controller. Eight pounds and 1200W is 150W/lb, which should get the job done. Of the 8 pounds, 3.2 lbs will be batteries and motor. I'm using a 3A switching BEC made from a cell phone charger.

I'm going with S3004 BB servos unless I find I need a higher torque S3010 for perhaps the ailerons since there is only one servo to drive both.

On to step 1 of the assembly instructions...

Uh the flaps take one servo and the ailerons take 2.
I hope I can use a 16" propellor on this one like my H9 Miss America.
A 4 blade scale prop would be about 20" dia as I recall.

You are right about the two aileron servos. And the scale prop should be about 4x15" for a 65 inch wing span. Let me check on a 4 blade 15x6 or 15x5 prop (and also check the tip speed on the props for the pitch speed I need)

Best I can tell, the P-51 prop is 10.7ft dia. and wingspan is 37ft.
Then for a 65" model, the prop would be 18.8" dia.
Check my math.

If our model accurately depicts a clipped wing racer ( I cannot remember is Dago or VooDoo is clipped wing) then the prop diameter would be larger.

The Merlin/Packard engines are geared about 2.5 to one so the prop is really huge.

I think you're right again. I may just 'live' with a 15.5x12 4-blade APC since I don't want gears. It's close enought.
It's also not going to spin all that fast. I still think I'll be okay with a 4130 motor. I may need to come down to 5S and 60A for around 5,000 peak rpm.

Just got done reading a lengthy history of teh Mustang and teh prop size is about 11ft.

You should just try a 15X10 on 6S. It has been used by many on the similar H9 P-51. ine flis great with it and nothing gets too hot.

I have a Hyperion 4035 that can do 1600-1800W for mine

It's red

Is this it? If it is, it's red with a 4 blade.

Yup this is not actually Dago Red even though that's what the instructions say.

feather,

You found a 15x10 4-blade... That's better than the 15.5x12 APC 4-blade since I can run at higher RPMs and go back to 6S. Who makes it? Tx

Scale models are getting more and more realistic! There must be a 4-cycle .82 in that baby...

No No I meant you should try an APC-E 2 blade 15X10. It will probably fly the plane better than any 4 blade you can find. Generally fewer blades are more effecient. The reason that the full scale has a 4 blade is that a 2 blade would be too long.

INewton - as smooth as that was running you can tell it was not about to race. On race day they sound much different.

That's Strega. Looks like early '90s paint scheme because no white swooshes towards the tail.

All of them (Voodoo, Dago and Strega) have clipped wings.

They have removed the racing canopy from the current Voodoo. See recent photo attached. How recent? Two weeks ago at Reno.

For scale note the prop is about as tall as the fin.
Looks good too.
