Baywatch Boat!

Here's a boat that could be fun- the Baywatch Rescue Boat!

The LA County FD Lifeguard service has a number of these boats, and they're really called "Baywatch" boats. They're built by Seaways Boat Co. in Long Beach (not to be confused with Seaways Boats in Maine). 32 feet long, powered by twin Cummins 300 hp diesels, they move out at 30 knots. Pumps allow the bow-mounted fire monitor and hand-held hose to put out 1000 gallons per minute.

I took these pictures in Marina Del Rey, 6/12/06.
Some more info can be found in various places in the LACOFD website, such as:
http://www.lacofd.org/Lifeguards/Fie...Paramedics.asp

Anyone know if plans have been published anywhere?
I was thinking... a Dumas Trojan hull might be of about the right aspect, at 31" it would be close to 1/12 scale...

Also saw Fireboat 110, which is stationed at Marina Del Rey. Christened in 2005, this 40 foot boat was built by Kvichak in Seattle. See some video at:

http://www.lacofd.org/Galleries/VideoUnit.asp

Cheers,
Pat Matthews

Chuck, I was afraid someone would go there...

No, the real LACoFD Bayatch lifeguards are dudes with some serious qualifications. Baywatch boat captains at Catalina need to be lifeguards, firemen, AND paramedics, and have USCG certs for marine assistance (towing). And they must be able to tolerate being at the beach all the time.

And did I mention that the same boat (with a different cabin) is used by the Orange County Sheriff, operating out of Newport Beach? No I didn't! But that's another nice place to visit.

Thanks Pat. Living here in China, its nice to think of home every now & then.

Can't wait for the Chinese version of Baywatch to appear on CCTV. With all the plastic surgery available here, I doubt they'd have too hard a time when it comes to the casting call.

And what does Jeff Bridges have to do with the Baywatch boats? Well, his dad, Lloyd Bridges, was in Sea Hunt, which was sometimes filmed in the LA area. And he drove a boat called Argonaut, which was a custom made 33 foot Trojan fly bridge. And I'm being inspired by the lines of a 31' Trojan while drawing the Baywatch model. So there!

Hmmm....
Here's the inside of one of these Sheriff boats, being shown off by a sea lion on the news:
