Weather Notes

For anyone checking in here:
Yes, it's Friday at 9 a.m. and we've had light rain move through early this morning. Tstorms are possible in the afternoon.

For the contest the forecast goes dryer: Partly cloudy with scattered afternoon Tstorms. Thank goodness!

With a little luck these isolated cells will move around us, and we won't even need to take a break.

A good thing for New Mexico. Though not all parts of the state have experienced drought relief, the central valleys and the whole Northern areas are well wetted.

On balance it's been another great flying year weather-wise, with the high cloud bases, long range visibility, and instability typical of New Mexico.

Here's hoping for great contest weather through the weekend!

Saturday Update

Today was a good flying day. We started in light conditions, and then moved into strong conditions with a prevailing breeze. We flew straight through and completed 24 heats by 5 p.m.;10 minute windows with 10 minute breaks.

A comfortable pace, but not slow, especially if you were flying two classes. Some people travelled significant distances just to watch the event and get close to electric soaring. Wow.

Jon Padilla of Colorado is dominating Unlimited, winning all his heats, same as Dale Nutter is whomping through Limited class. I did pretty well and lead the Outrunner event, while Dennis Renner is leading Speed 400.

Anything can happen yet, and many contestants are still in the running to win their respective events. If any of the leaders open the door, there are several pilots just waiting to walk through. Tomorrows weather calls for partly cloudy and 5 mph wind. Moving the event to September seems to have been a good idea.

Getting ready to go out. CD Phil Gilbert is probably calling for 15 minute rounds today. Keep us on our toes.
From last round yesterday, gives an idea of the conditions. Shannon was waaay high between two overdeveloped Cumulo-Nimbus to the West.

To all the wonderful people in the Albuquerque Soaring Association, you put on a great contest. This years weather was definitely a winner, all that New Mexico is supposed to be.

Your coordination and automated running of the rounds went very smoothly. The outrunner class caught on very quickly, and for all practical purposes was a one design motor contest with a real mixture of airframes to spice up the competition. The MOM contest format with simultaneous launching is the real beauty of F5J, and with minimal equipment, (basically enough landing tapes and a bull horn) can be duplicated by almost any club. Hats off to Aradhana for the automated tape which ran without stopping for all of Saturday and Sunday. 10 Minute Rounds, with 10 minutes between each round made it very predictable which is great for flying two classes.

We made it back to Kansas City despite a quick bout with a mini tornado which left 3" of hail on the road in west Texas minutes before we drove through the area. Trees were stripped of their leaves but no big branches broken. As in soaring, timing is everything.

The Albuquerque guys did a great job of organizing and running this event. I'd like to add my thanks too. We had excellent weather and mostly very challenging conditions. Nice to get together again with flyers from other states.

Thanks,
Lenny

What about pictures? Who flew what in the various classes?

I need to get out to this meet and beat up on Nutter some. It's been awhile.

Hi Jeff. Thanks for asking. I'm waiting for a big batch of pictures to come on CD by snail mail. Then I'll finish a nice write up and post it on the web site.
