Back in the 60s the parks depts were allowed to oil the eggs in the spring (this stops them from hatching), then someone claimed that that was cruel and illegal. That and getting people feeding them (which is illegal here, but seldom enforced) has lead to the population explosion. We did have one of the local parks dept do a round up a few years back, but they discovered that unless they do it in the spring (when they molt and can't fly) the geese were back before the trucks. They finally did one in the spring relocated the geese to an island near one of the Indian reserves, the Indians waited until just before the geese could fly them filled there freezers. This didn't go down too well with the bleeding hearts and they were stopped from doing it again. Personally I thought it was an ideal solution.

Our parks dept. came round and using giant sized flagstones created these
half doz. nice level shoreside "patio's" at different locations -we like to use the
one nearest the parking circle to launch off of.problem is this is where the
geese spend the night when the park is closed each night.WHAT A MESS. My
task every Sun. that we meet is to use a small bucket and sluice clean the flagstones.

Do you know what kind of oil the park department used.

It is illegal across the lake to feed the geese, too. But you have these people who don't understand that there is an overpopulation of these birds since the are protected under the migatory bird laws from being hunted.
I was out at our pond testing a boat in early summer last year when this family gets out and start feeding all the geese bread, I ask them if they would stop because it is aganist the Law. (they have it marked in the county parks) I pulled out my cellphone and starting talking, giving information about the family and auto plate numbers. You should have seen how fast they moved, thinking I called the police.

My only hope is a couple of airliners come down with Geese hits and then maybe the population will have to be reduced - but then again maybe not. But since I only fly for work after my wife gets finished sueing the company, the airline, and maybe Canada (no offense) since that is their country of origin, she should live reasonable well.

It was back when I was in High School when I worked with the parks dept. That's a long time ago. I think it was a vegitable oil that we used. We sprayed it through a dedicated weed sprayer. One person would do the spraying and nest checking while two to five others fended off the adult geese. I did some searching this morning and found a Missouri site that describes "How to Addle and Oil Eggs" http://mdc.mo.gov/landown/wild/nuisance/w_geese/how.htm
which matches what I remember.

That was great infrmation and a gerat web site. I have to get over to the pond and survey the situation. I know at work I ran int o a couple on the walking path, around the pond. What is intersting when i am home at work I have this pond all to myself and take the boats for a run. The geese never take over the pond or do nests near the pond. Need to take a sample of the water. Our club is a different type of pond lots of nest and little ones and plenty of people feeding the geese. Personally I get a kick out of the geese if there were not so many of them.

Springer's guy's... not goose $**t...

Ok Toes. Springers it is. Just finished my Springer Barge. Build in the spirit of Springer construction. Hull bottom in 3/4" ply, sides are 1x4s, and deck is 1/4 ply with 1x1 stiffeners. It (to be name latter) measures out at 34"x18"x3 3/4". To ballast out took 20lbs of lead.

I think that the solution to so many geese at the local pong is to get the warship guys to sail around more. Ya know, the ones with the bb guns on their decks, they could fire hints at the geese to keep them away. SInce you cant hurt the wildlife, just say you thought it was a warship camoflaged as a goose!

Canada Geese are a problem over on our lakes too, but the wildlife wardens Prick the eggs of the Canada geese but leave the Brent geese ones alone so the numbers are controlled. At the moment the main problem is swans getting a bit restless and Dog owners letting their dogs chase them and our boats, one dog even tried to nick the ball from our springers tugs while we were playing football on Sunday.
