plane to build for S 280

I have a Great Planes geared 4:1 speed 280 with an 8 x 4.7 prop, HS 81s, & 555 rx. The battery I have now is an 8 cell 600mah.

I seem to be having trouble finding a slow flying trainer for this gear. I am interested in something like the Kolibri or IFO trainer, or other foamie. These all take lighter gear from what I have read.

Any suggestions for kits or scatch builts would be appreciated. I like to F3 to build with.

Great Planes Tutor. A good trainer, and a nice model to fly even for more experienced pilots looking for a great way to relax.

I loved flying mine over lakes, a few feet off the water. We took it on vacation, fits in the car no problem... check out pictures at:

Flies fine with medium sized gear (Hitec 555, 10 amp control, micro servos as opposed to nano)

Be sure to put in plenty of dihedral if building without ailerons, only way you can go wrong.

I had actually thought about the Tutor a while back, but have not heard any flight reports on it. I looked though your pictures. Your plane looks a little more realistic than the one I saw in the catalog. Did you modify it in any way?

What battery do you use in the Tutor?
What is the duration?

I built my Tutor completely stock, covered in TowerKote. You could knock off weight with lighter covering, but mine flew just fine and was quite durable.

I've flown the Tutor with a wide variety of packs.

The best match for gentle flying is the 7 cell AAA NiMH pack. I got 20-22 minutes of solid flying at full power. It is not aerobatic other than a loop or sloppy spin, but has plenty of power to climb briskly.

If you want more hot dogging, 8 cell 300 ma nicads are a bit lighter and can dump more current. Expect 10-12 minutes. You can buy these surplus - cordless phones use them.

I also used my Tutor as a testbed for a Lithium Ion pack that I built from an old laptop pack, and flew it for 30-40 minutes at a time. It required building a special charger and some caution in using the packs. Please read up on Ezone about LiIon cells before trying these.

If you find yourself getting a bit bored with it after a while, installing a 280BB will transform it rather nicely.

I loved the plane - I'd fly it over the lake early mornings before work. It is the ultimate in stress free flight. It isn't aerobatic, or real pretty, but it does fly well. Cruising around at dusk or dawn is great.

Unless your 600 ma packs are NiMH, they are likely too heavy. 600 NiMH cells would work great if they were the same size and weight as the 300 ma nicads.

By the way, this was with a 10 x 4.5 slow flyer prop.

I had bought a bunch of cordless phone batteries when they were clearing them out for $1. I was not sure if they were going to be feasable.

What is a 280BB?

The 280BB (for Ball Bearing) is a 280ish size motor but much more power and higher amp draw. Sort of in the speed300 class but has external brushes. Costs a lot. Pic below.

I probably shouldn't mention it since it seems to be hard to get in certain places but the Graupner 280 Race motor is a good upgrade for the standard 280. It's cheap, powerful and not an amp hog like the 280BB or S300.

If you don't mind scratch builds why not go the whole hog and make something up yourself? It's a fun thing to do.
