Question
Carbon Fiber vs. Fiberglass

I'm just getting started building flat wing foamy profile models. Which do you prefer for stiffeners on the body, wing, and stab ... carbon fiber or fiberglass? Rod or tube? And how do you select what diameter tube or rod you're going to use? Most of the foamy plans I've seen don't specify.

I prefer carbon fiber for its stiffness over fiberglass. Look at as many plans as you can to see how other people have done it for simular sized planes. I use 4mm = 5/32in. carbon fiber tubes for planes from 28 to 40 inch wingspan built out of 1/4 inch foam.

Is that for EPP foam or something more rigid,... or does it matter?

Robert: If you are going to use EPP, you should visit this thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=382174
Sloper Steve, Dave North et al can fill ya in on it. FG is much cheaper....

I don't think it matters much, because that size carbon fiber is very stiff, but I build from Bluecor FFF mostly, and it is fairly ridgid by itself.

Don't know if this matters, but I found a great place (or so I thought) for cheap fiberglass rods to use on the wings of FFF profile planes. Its umberellas. They usually have 1/8 inch or so fiberglass rods in them, you have to work carefully to get the plastic pieces off them but they are free. I think a good bit heavier than CF though. Just my two cents. Ray
