CASA F5B Contest (old VA F5B contest) May 20-21

Just two more weekends to practice before the Capital Area Soaring Association (CASA) F5B contest on May 20-21, 2006. Due to the loss of the Virginia flying field, the normal May Virginia F5B contest has been shifted to the CASA flying field located just north of Washington DC, in Maryland. I am starting another thread since the last one started wandering.

The contest will be run in the normal VA F5B fashion with two classes: 16 cells and 10 cells. Many pilots will be flying FAI legal F5B and F5F planes, but there will be no measurements or weights taken. The only difference between the two classes will be the number of sub c or smaller NiMh cells; i.e. 10 cells and under and 11-16 cells. Due to safety concerns by the hosting club, absolutely no Lipos are allowed in competitive airframes. Exceptions will be made only for Warmliners, and Foamies. This is a fly what you have contest. The primary purpose is to have fun and allow all individuals the chance to participate in a F5B format contest.

We will fly only 5 minutes for duration to speed things up. Hopefully my computer timing equipment will be operational by the contest, but we will default to hand timing if it is not ready. Motor infractions will be called as warnings. The purpose of this contest is to learn and have fun. Competitive pilots will need to bring a spare receiver on your flying channel to interface with the timing equipment. This timing system will time each leg and all motor runs. It will signal motor infractions.

The majority of flying will be on Saturday, starting first flights at about 9:00 and trying to wrap up comfortably in time for a group dinner. We will finish the flying on Sunday in time for the out-of-towners to comfortably start home; the die-hards can fly until they have nothing left to fly.

The course will probably be a right handed course. The picture below shows one of the potential layouts. Trevor and I flew this layout last week and there is plenty of room. As with all fields, one needs to familiarize themselves with the location of the plane eating trees that come into play on long straight-in approaches and with wide turns not initiated from the proper side of the course.

The directions to the flying site can be found on CASA’s web site http://www.soarcasa.org under flying sites on the bottom of the page. There are maps and descriptions on how to get to the site. The address of the turn off to the field is 600 East Gude Drive, directly across the street from Fisher Lumber. You need to drive through the group of building, pass through the chain link fence and head up the hill on the dirt road. The flying site is on top of an old landfill.

Please post if you plan on attending and what you will be flying, and on what channel.

Don Barker, Chn #32

Raketewurm II, Neu 1509/1Y/5.2, Kontronic FAI 18, StraitAir 17x19, IB4200
backup - Avionik B1L, Neu 1512/.5Y/6.7, Hacker 195, RFM 17x18, IB3800
Avionik F5F, Neu 1509/1D/6.7, Hacker 195, RFM 17x16, IB3800

It is going to take more than 32 legs to place in 10 cell class. In 16 cell, Trevor is knocking out 43 legs in practice (I was timing so I know). In the contest I'm going to be flying to make 40 legs with my new Raketenwurm.

I love to come, but I only have a lipo setup:
Zoom Sport with Neu 1509/1Y/6.7 with 4S2P Hyperion VX 2100.

Does anybody have a spare pack of "legal cells" I could "rent"? I am willing to pay for the usage, of course, in any form or fashion we might come up with.

I never flew an actual F5B race, but I would love to try.

Thanks, Beat

Sounds fantastic! Thank you!
I am using Deans on my setup, which pulls just short of 100 amps. I am glad soldering whatever is necessary onto my ESC. Where can I buy the correct Stekker connectors? Checked at Esprit, Soaring USA and NE, but no success.

Also, did a quick check with motocalc for my setup. Looks like the 1509/1Y would pull around 90 amps for a 1000 Watts with a 17x13. That sounds good to me.

I am very much looking forward to try this out and fly a first contest. Thank you for your support.

Got them, thanks!
Do you have them soldered directly to the batteries or is there a cable? My ESC cable is super short. Maybe I have to make a piece for in between the ESC and the battery. Also, how do you isolate them so that they can't touch?

Cables are 3-4 cm on my esc . The pack is 10 and 6 and the connectors are solder directely on the cells. The Zoom nose look like the Avionik. The Neu is heavy , and the cells have to be moved toward the tail?

ok.
Will make a piece of cable that should allow us to connect the batteries.
Looking forward to trying this out.
How can I meet you down in Maryland?

Yes, anyone can fly on Friday. Just let me know when you want to fly so I can make sure the gate is open to the field. During the day it is typically open.
