Moth Flying in Afghanistan

Here's some pics of the Moth from this afternoon. May be the only one in Afghanistan! All the locals want one but nobody can get mail. It is hard to explain to them that you are going to need parts...stuff breaks.

Anyways, enjoy the pics.

Cool, pics Brad! When I first glanced at the first picture, I thought it was a full scale moth because of the guy standing over to the right! LOL!!

Was actually out flying! With windy weekend days and being stuck in the office during the nice weekdays, I've started flying at night in illuminated mall parking lots!

The mall I flew at on Saturday night (well technically Sunday morning!) had a funfare set up in a section of the parking lot, and some of the hands were closing up for the night and getting into their cars (it was about 1:30am), they were thrilled and a little surprised to see a little orange moth flying in the equally orange light of the mall parking lot lights, much as moths might do! ^_^

Just went for a flight in the Walmart parking lot near here on the way back from a night out with the gang. Beautiful! Just a little headwind to give me some altitude to play with, the lights of the city providing a very nice backdrop

Of course I did seem to lose a wheel collar and wheel at some point during the flight! But I kept on flying til the pack got low and managed to set her down like a leaf nonetheless Looked around for the errant wheel, but it was a little too dark for that! Thank goodness I've got a spare set of 1-3/4" DuBro superlite foam wheels! I've got a decent amount of spares since I finally admitted to myself that my poor old black moth was due for pasture and discombobulated it for parts *sniff*

Anyhoo, it's soooo nice to finally have some decent flying weather!

Now I'd best get to bed! I've got a special day tomorr.. urm.. I mean in 27 minutes! Hehehe

Goodnight all!

Kitty

p.s. Tomorrow I'll go off topic and tell you how much fun I had driving my mom's fiance's newly acquired 1972 Triumph TR6 on Saturday! Oh wait, I guess I just did! Wheeeeee! I want one...

Well, I finally found what motivated the previous owner's inspiration on the paint job on my Tiger Moth. I found it in Model Aviation Magazine, April 2004 issue, Page 39.

As you can see it was an article that started on Page 38 about "Scale Masters 2003" competition. This particular meet was held in Dayton, Ohio and this program was conceived more than 20 years ago to bring people together and enjoy each other's "Scale" models. The program has grown to more than 22 regional qualifiers in the US, Canada, and even Puerto Rico.

Okay, on Page 39 in the middle of the page shows Jeremy Arvin's de Havilland D.H.82A in which won Expert and narrowly missed claiming Grand Champion.

As you can see the paint job is almost exactly like my little GWS pico Tiger Moth except the cowling of course.

Modeling is just super as you never know where people will get their inspiration. I wonder where Mr. Arvin got his for his large 1/3 scale Tiger Moth....

It has been pretty quiet around here...

I'm still working on my "Tiger's Moth". (I want it to be purrr-fect.)

But other than that my bad luck continues.
As some of you already know, I don't work at the brewery anymore. Apparently my 9 hour day can be eliminated on a whim. (Of course, how they have no one running shipping/receiving and still operate I don't understand...)
And yesterday, the crank bearings in my Spitfire let go. She's at the 'doctors' now, and she'll come home soon to my 'surgical' expertise. (I'm going to rebuild her in my parent's garage.)

I think I'll go back to bed...

Gosh, Corey.... you are having a run of bad luck! Really sorry to hear about the Spitfire. The only prescription I can give you is to .... go flying!
What happened on the crank? Did it turn a bearing? Hope nothing got scored up.

Yeah, I think it did turn a bearing, Buzz. I should know soon enough if there was any major damage.

Thanks for the prescription. I'll be back for a refill on that as soon as this one's done.

Corey

PS Buzz, I went to a Porsche Club meeting with a good friend of mine on the weekend. When the shots and video get posted of the parking lot races, I'll let you know where to find them. (his '72 914 placed a faster time than half the 911's there!)

Hey gang. All is doing well here. The Moth is getting its flying time in. The epoxy used originally to put the wings on started to peel off, so I had to sand and add some new stuff on. This time I added in Micro Balloons (I love that stuff!) It is ready for some more action, and that will be very soon. I am almost temped to take it with me on vacation, but we are already going to have tooo much stuff to take. I would have been nice to take it out to NY & NJ. My Dad has been looking forward to seeing some of my planes fly, but I really want him to see the Moth. It is the only plane I am truely proud of. I was thinking of adding on one of the new DuBro micro steerable tail wheels to it.

Eeeep! Sorry to hear about your Spitfire Corey!

Hmm... micro steerable tailwheel eh Tom? Might have to look into one of those for my moth!

Cory:

There are some great wineries on the Niagara Pennisula. Now that you have done the beer thing, how about checking out a winery or two??
Really,.....might be worth a try.

In the interim, find solace and comfort in your Moth. You provide it the guidance, it returns the inspiration.

The Spitfire problem is, most definitely, a bummer. Had experienced a similar problem with my Opel GT, E-Production, 1st lap of a 30 lap feature race. Definitely was not happy with the engine builder! But, cars are cars. As one wag put it many years ago, a Ferrari is like a really gorgeous woman....fabulous looking, really hot.............and totally unfaithful!

Moths, however, are very special. Love your Moth, and it will give you unconditional enjoyment and confidence, even if it is only to a height of 25 feet!

I hope you find those crank journals to be shiney bright with NO scores. If you did turn a bearing, it misaligns the oiling hole and that generally lets the crank touch the bearings. I hope you lucked out! Yeah, I'd like to see that video. That 914 is balanced perfectly for parking lot races. The 911 is extremely light in the front and when you kick 400hp it tries to lift the front tires off the ground. 911's are better suited for long fast tracks. C'mon down and take a ride with me. You'll make mud in your pants!
