ESC question: What is BEC...

Question: I have a CC Thunderbird 18A ESC, and it has a 3A BEC...What exactly is BEC and what does it do?

BEC stands for battery ellimination circuit. This circuit powers the servos and Rx. 3 amps of electricity can be diverted from the motor to power the servos when needed. The BEC also has logic which senses the battery voltage, and at the low end of voltage, the BEC will shut down power to the propeller assuring the rx and servos with the last bits of electric power, and thus a safe landing. Hope this helps.

I was having the loose wire re-soldered to my ESC today and the technician asked me about the BEC, and I had no answer for him. Thank you Dave, your explanation helps alot.

ESC is fixed, so my Blu Plate will be flying at the next fly-in.

Nice to hear that's fixed and you're ready!

Nice to have a technician, in my case, that would be ME!

I have a basic question, and please excuse me for coming in late to this discussion.

Why do quadrotors require 300 Hz update rates for the motor speed? It seems to me that the PID control signal would be very noisy at this rate. Or, does this update rate provide more speed precision somehow?

Thanks!

It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce quadrotor could not carry a one pound coconut.
