Father's Day is Coming - How you going to get Dad flying?

You are loving RC Flying?

Father's Day is coming and you want to get your Dad involved. What are you going to get him in order to get him interested and involved?

Is he interested now, but has not taken the first step?

Is he resistant, but could be persuaded?

Father's Day is Coming! Give Dad the gift of flight AND more time with you.

Let us know what you plan to do. Your ideas might help others get their Dad involved.

Let me tell you what I did. Didn't work.

Last year, on his birthday, I was able to visit. He lives in Florida and I live in NY, so we don't see a lot of each other.

I decided to get him into RC flying. Here was the plan:

1) GWS Pico Tiger Moth Kit.
Easy to fly
Fly in small space
Simple kit that we could build together.

2) Futaba 4 channel Radio. I had one I could give him.

3) Batteries and Charger - came from my inventory as well

4) Flight Simulator -
Trainer port on the radio worked with FMS. All set!

Bought what I needed and had it shipped to him.
Packed up all else and went to see him.

1) No interest in building the kit - OK, so I built it. Took 3 nights.

2) Flight sim was fun, but not a long term interest - Oh no!

3) Found a local club. About 10 M away. We went to visit twice. No one was ever there.

4) Quite windy where he is, so Pico TM was not best choice. Not a windy day plane. It flew, but did not handle wind very well. We did find a large open space, so a more wind worthy plane would have been better.

5) Walking around in an open field was tough on a man of 79 with a bad knee. TM has no real ability to roll out on rough ground and no ability to taxi back. A plane with better taxiing ability would have been helpful.

So, we flew together while I as there but he really was not interested. Maybe an indoor RC helicopter might have been a better choice. OH well!

The equipment went to my 16 year old niece who was interested. At least it is not rotting in the closet.

So, maybe you will learn from my mistakes.

How you going to do it?

I got my Father into it by taking a Slow Stick to his house and showing it to him. Then going to the park to fly it. Took it off and flew it for a couple minutes, asked him if he wanted to fly it and he said no. Waited another minute and handed him the TX and walked away. He was hooked, 2 days later he was flying. That was about 2 years ago, he now has 8 planes.

There's nothing i could do to get my dad interested in RC flying. My grandad flew for 50+ years. My dad despised him for it, cause my grandad would never let him fly but always forced him to sit and watch the building process.

The key i'm guessing would have to be interest they can't be forced to do it if they are not interested. The only good that comes out of those situations is you found a way of justifying your new huge equipment purchase. (cause your gonna keep it anyway)

My dad can fly with me if he wants. I take my planes on vacation with me.I don't think he does and I would never presume to TRY and get him interested.
AND ANOTHER THING!...Why would I want to get someone that I love ADDICTED to anything. And If you don't think that you're addicted, think again!

I also tried to get my dad involved.. Failed miserably... Took him out to watch (and fly) my speedy.. He immediately started complaining about the heat, then the bugs, then the sun was in his eyes.. then "I can't see it"... etc. etc.. He is 85 years old and has no hobby or interests.. My mom died a few years ago and he really NEEDS something but I can't find it for him. I told him "dad you need SOMETHING, it doesn't have to be RC planes, but you need something!".. his reply "what should I do?".... Geez, I can't pick it for ya!.... stamp collecting?.. line dancing?... as long as it's SOMETHING besides watching CNN. !!!

My mom died a few years ago too. After a year or so, my brother suggested E-Harmony.com. Now my dad dates women from all over the country! I think that's his new hobby.Quite honestly, I can't believe it! But..true story.

I got my dad a slowstick a couple of christmas's ago, took him a bit to get the hang of it, but now he's got more planes than me, which is saying something. I belive he's up to 18 or so, 3 of which are glow planes. Addiction is right!

I've been trying to get my dad involved. Being a former member of the USAF, he is already interested in planes. I have to get around my mother first though. She has said that since he retired, his hobbies will NOT be R/C related.
