Thumbs Up for Model Electronics Corp (MEC)

Just a quick thumbs up to MEC.
I placed an order on Monday July 1 for a Super Box and pinion and I received it today (July 3). That's fast service if you ask me - and that included having the pinion bored to 5mm.

BTW, the gearbox looks very nice (as expected) and the instructions are complete with a couple of humorous remarks thrown in.

No. I'll leave that to Jeff.

Superbox gearboxes are nice but there are some things I found out about them that I would like to share.

There is a pin that secures the spur gear to the shaft that is designed to break on a prop strike. You may want to buy spares or make your own out of 1/16" wire. Another source is pins used for power tools supposedly found at local hardware stores.

One issue I've had with this gear box is that somehow the shaft must have developed a burr around the set screw flat and I can't get the prop hub off for the life of me. A bought another one of these gearboxes and put it in my Mega powered LT25 and decided to try a little blue Loctite hoping the hub won't turn against the set screw preventing a burr on the edge of the flat. Now I can't get that hub off, the Loctite is holding it on too well. I can't win with these prop hubs on these gearboxes. If somebody knows how to get a stuck hub off the shaft please post.

I have a couple of 5mm set screws, 20t and 18t, and found the screws would hit the spur gear even though I ground a flat onto the Mega shaft. I just ground the flat a little deeper to have the screw head clear the spur gear teeth. I wish they used shorter set screws in these 5mm pinions.

Other than that I love them.

Stuck prop driver: try heating it with a torch, then pulling it off.

Setscrew interference: Turn the pinion around so the setscrew collar portion is in front of the spur, not behind it (in other words so that it is away from the motor).

Another tool to buy a torch. OK.

I did put the pinion on the way you suggested but I centered it on the spur. I thought it would be better that way. Now I know.
Thanks

No longer in business

Unfortunately, they appear to have shut down the business this spring.

Elene and Pete retired and closed down the shop. I emailed them about 9 months ago during an order about parts and stuff for their mini-boxes, they told me the news so I ordered extra parts and a few more complete mini boxes. They said they were trying to sell the business to a good person to carry the name forward.

They had a great product base and I will miss them a lot.

Bummer. I bought a superbox several months ago and I didn't hear the news. I haven't even used it. I hope I have the right gear ratio. Anybody know where I could get spare 5mm pinions? They are 48 pitch:

Tower sells a 36mm gearbox that uses 48 degree pitch 5mm pinions along with 48 degree Delrin Spurs. They are a good bet, contact them...I think they have 12T and 19T pinions...along with up to 70T spurs

Yep. Great Planes GPMG0515
Sad to see the big guy obviously stealing MECs design. BUT it's cheaper and you get 2 spurs and pinions: 14, 20, 70, 90. I wonder how it compares quality wise? 17" prop, 1kw OK?

Does anyone have the contact number?

I would be interested in talking to Pete about purchasing the rights to their company. Does anyone have any contact information?

Thanks,
Scott Stockwell
