Prop selection for A20-20L

With the A20-20L and TPPL1320 I have tried several different props now. I like the 11x3.8SF the best. Hovers, slow high alpha knife edges are nicer and easier. The plane torque rolls more on the 10 and 11 x4.7 props and pulls more to the left on big uplines. Packs come down the same temp with either the 11x3.8 or the 10x4.7, and the flight times are about the same. Wattmeter reads the same with both of these props. Landings are slower and easier with the 11x3.8sf.

This weekend I will try the 11x5.5 E thin electric prop as Gadzby suggested. I picked one up at the LHS yesterday. If it is a decent day I will get some better pics and a video of the plane. Never uploaded a video. Any advice on that is appreciated.

Extraguy-You are welcome! Hope you get one in the air soon. Too much fun.

Tried the 11x5.5E prop today. It pulls the same amps and Watts as the 10x4.7sf on my meter. The plane flys faster, fast knife edge is impressive and really no coupling at all. This would be a good prop for practicing pattern/IMAC I would guess (if I knew anything about that!). Much harder to keep it in a stable hover and to keep the nose up in the knife edge than with the 11x3.8sf prop IMO. Going back to the 11x3.8sf myself...with that on there this plane makes me look way better than I am!

Renosportflyer,

thank you for starting this build thread. I find it very useful. I have bought a fliton for almost a month and hestitated building it because it felt too delicate for my rough hands. I'm afraid that I may break it before I actually launch it.
I have gone through your instructions( I have actually downloaded all the pages and paste it into Word document) several times to make sure that i have grasp all the tips that you are talking about.

I will start this once I have completed the pitts. Once again. Thank you.

Mave-
You are welcome. Still flying mine every chance I get. All the other planes are getting dusty just sitting around in the garage! The Extra mini is holding up pretty well. The wheel pants are getting pretty busted up pretty quick though. Either too thin fiberglass, or else too careless a pilot...not sure which! Might have to ditch those pants here soon...make it even lighter... Otherwise having a BLAST.

schroedm-
Very nice pics. Sharp looking plane. Thanks for sharing those.

Hi,
has anyone tried to beautify the cockpit yet? The current look of the cockpit is really undeserving for such a beautiful plan..

I agree, but I haven't seen any pilots, cockpits, etc in there yet. If you do, please get some pics!

renosportflyer,

I have a question,
did you use the original hinges or did you change them?
On the wing, I am planning to stack a small piece of wood between the servo and the wing so that the screws have more threading length. Is that a good idea?

I used the original CA hinges that came with the ARF. I cut the length down to size so that just a tiny amount of hinge protrudes past the balsa on either side. I put a pin in the center of the hinge, and I left the pin in while I applied fresh thin CA (if thin CA sits around too long it thickens and does not fully penetrate a CA hinge...this is not good). I still haven't sealed the hinge gaps with tape or covering, but I know I should. I fly so slow I think that is why I have not had any flutter problems.

For the servos I placed them in the well, drilled a tiny hole for the screw. Pulled the servo back out. Put thin CA in the holes. Let it dry a few minutes. Put the servo back in and used the screws that came with the servos. I have been doing that for a while now and I haven't had a servo come out/loose yet. Even with HARD wrecks the servos are still right where I left them as I sort through the debris!

I tried to CA the hinges just now. However, by the time I drip CA on the four hinges, they have dried up so much that I couldn't shift the flap in place any more. I cut it up eventually. I'm going to the LHS tomorrow to get some replacement hinges.
Do you think I should get the paper type or the plastic type?
