Anyone tried Auto-Air Colors (water based) paint?

So I was at my clients house the other day reviewing their financial plan and went out to check my clients most recent art work. He is a professional sign artist specializing in air brush work. He also paints murals and graphics on hot rods.

So we got to talk about painting and he said I needed to check out this new paint that is waterbased and give it a try on my planes. He says it is mega easy clean up and will take almost any clearcoat over it.

Have any of you guys tried out this stuff if so whats the verdict???

Here is their web site. Looks good http://www.autoaircolors.com/index.htm

Thanks for the link Dave. I don't see why it wouldn't work. I know one of the Fermin locals does some painting for a living...must be automotive judging by his finished product. If I think about it, I'll ask him the next time I see him. Water clean up sure does sound appealing!

These are createx paints. Used them loads. The shock flyer guys love 'em for painting depron. Check the 3d threads.
I wrote an article on pimping shockies using these.
JulianB will chime in no doubt. He's doing the spraying.
Gonna treat my cuda and jart to a coat. Awesome colour range.
Excellent stuff.

Cool, thanks Andy. I was amazed too by these to see what my sign painter buddy was doing with these and just wanted to hear other peoples experiences. I just bought an airbrush on Ebay to detail my slopers with.

On Auto-Airs website it even shows Nubbie from the American Chopper show using this stuff and he gives a step by step on painting flames. I am addicted to that show

Fantastic paints.

I highly recommend them. Particularly as all the cleaning up can be done with water.

They dry like lightning, particularly if you follow the instructions and spray on successive light coats, avoiding wet coats. I even flash off with a heat gun to speed things up.

Get yourself some really good quality masking material too. I bought a 600mm wide x 50m roll cut in two from a local supplier, cost me 50 but the results are amazing, and the best bit is my vinyl cutter eats it up!!!

How about Sparklescent Rockstar Red, transparents, dayglo...the list goes on.

I'm waiting on a 'how to' vid and a set of masks to paint 'fire' ...

let you know how that goes.

Buy em and try em. You won't regret it. Buy the 4oz bottles though. Once you get a taste for it the 2oz bottles don't last very long!

cheers

Julian are these available here in the UK and if so where from. Thinking of the Rodent. I haven't got a colour scheme in mind yet would like to go bright dayglo colours I think.

Hehehehe...

Wanna see some of my first efforts using these paints?

The biplane is straight onto raw EPP, took a little while to work out how to tack the masks, but a light spray of 3m77 onto the sticky side of the masks to help the glue did the trick.

the foamy is a Votec from Foamy Factory plans

The picture in the centre is a mini 3DX, painted with tamiya polycarb (rc car) paints - the smoke tint works really well for subtle stuff - Createx have whole range of transparents to create similar effects. Note the poor edge to the canopy on the 3DX - that's what you get for rushing and not applying the paint as instructed!

The last pic is a Canterbury Aermacchi, hours of painstaking butt-jointed tape, spackle and paint. Nice though :-)
I've been so impressed I'm seriously considering giving up the day job to pursue all this at some point!!!

Warning:
As always, get yourself a decent mask to protect your bod whilst spraying. I got carried away the first time I used these paints and forgot to put my mask on. Woke up the following morning with a corking headache...never again...

Don't do it!!!!!! It'll look like a Fun fly!!!!

Can you use Adobe Illustrator or something like that?

If so, scan a 3 view and use it as a template to play around with colours etc. Like this....

Damn. There I go, giving away free advice again....
