I was considerin g a 1/2 scale one w' the Cox 130 can and a 4x2.5 but it looks like someone already tried that and it didn't work. The only other motor I have is the 400's and I would to go smaller. Lower amp draws, long flights etc. I'm starting to cut the foam right now for both the 1/2 scale and the 31".
I like the idea of making the bottom one piece. The airfoil should still be symmetrycal, Right?

Well, I decided to give the 1/2 scale a try. Almost finished. Just have to mount the motor esc and bend the servo rods. Looks real smmoth and weighs just under 4 oz. We'll see it's pretty windy here so not sure about a test flght today!

Well the big blue today performed well and was a great floater, The power system on a 2 cells is crap and would cook on a 3 cell. I threw on a Kan950 9.6V pack and it was good for about 5mins and a little heavy. I flew about 4 packs worth today. I put 5 packs in the small one. I fly it on a TP1300 and a tanic800. 3cells but the tanic seems to have more punch. I switch to a 6X4 today and it was great lots more power. Still not even warm till the last pack I'm not sure whats up but it flew for about 4 mins then I lost the motor. I got it down and the motor was super hot, after it cooled it would spin for a sec then studder to a stop. So looks like I have to redo that thing sigh. Don't know what to put on it the mean time.

BTW increased to max throws on the first wing, started a high speed dive (about 6 or 7 secs. worth) I got 14 and 1/2 rolls out of it. It was just a lucky pull out cause I wasn't sure what was up at the time LOL.

Couldn't even get it off the ground. I think it was more than the wind. I tried tosses at glide, half throttle and full. It seemed to have plenty of power, but no up and very sqirrely left and right. I think the left and right was the wind but I can't figure out why it won't go up. I mounted my motor on straight and I'm gonna remount it w' a little bit of up. The wing span is about 16.5" and I set the cg at 3.5". I moved the cg all over and trimmed it way up with the same results. Plenty of power just wont go up???????

Has anyone else tried half scale one of these that worked? I'm thinkin' maybe not enough wing area. Might go 20 or 24" and see how that goes. The 130 can seems to have plenty of oomph for a 4- 6 oz. plane.

Like stufine said, what prop are you using on it? On some of those smaller wings having the motor propped up just a tad bit in the rear can help. Also sounds like you maybe tail heavy.

I found on the threads a technique for getting the correct cg on a wing. Put a small piece carbon fiber or dowel right on the cg, have a hook or loop on the dowel so you can attach a string to it. Then suspend the wing in the air, (I used the garage door manual latch) move your components around until it levels out and presto! cg is set. I had a similar problem on one of my wings, plenty of power but wouldn't climb. With the above method I found out I was extremely tail heavy, once that was fixed the wing was good to go. I'll see if I can find that thread and post a link to it.

I'll try that cg method. The guy who started this thread said 7" or less and he used 7.25. Since my wing is 1/2 scale, I figured 3.5" cg? The prop is a 4x2.5 I think. I have a 4.25x2.5 I could try. This motor can't take alot of amps and the 4x2.5 draws 2.6 amps wot. I gave the motor a little up and I'l try 'er again tomorrow. I seen a link in here to a thread to determine what the cg should be But I couldn't see the figures on the link? Thanks

I tried to fly a 24" with what i thought was 7x6 prop.. might have been a 8x3.8 and a 2s batt with 8-10c i think.. i would throw it and it just came in for a glide landing with full motor speed.. maybe prop on wrong. I made this wing (about 34") and with the 7x6 and 2s batt it flew first toss. as i think you said bass.. prop up for 2s and down for 3s batts. and im using a 15 or 16 turn cd motor. its not fast but its just right for my learning.. well maybe a lil slower than i would like for my first flight but almost fine for my buddy crashing it. i really do think the sim time helped. at least i can paint this one cuz i know it will fly
